I. Definition: The Six Points of Harmony (Lục Hòa) are six fundamental rules of unity that the Buddha set for his followers so that a community can live together in harmony.
1. Harmony of Body — Dwelling Together
Work together and live together in the same place, united and treating one another like true brothers and sisters. Just as monks live together in the same temple and always share the same work.
2. Harmony of Speech — Avoiding Quarrels
Do not use harsh or cruel words, nor argue and scold one another in a way that gives rise to anger. Whenever there is disagreement, use gentle words to explain things so that everyone understands.
3. Harmony of Mind — Shared Joy
This means blending everyone's ideas together rather than each person insisting on their own; in any undertaking, consult one another, and only carry it out once agreement is reached.
4. Harmony of Precepts — Practicing Together
Always help one another and jointly observe and uphold the precepts.
5. Harmony of Benefits — Sharing Equally
Whatever benefits are gained must be shared equally with one another, with no one having less and no one having more.
6. Harmony of Views — Sharing Understanding
All knowledge and understanding should be explained to one another so that everyone learns together, rather than being kept to oneself alone.
II. Conclusion
The Buddha established these Six Points of Harmony as principles for his followers to live together, bringing concord to the community so that all may live according to his teaching and progress on the path of liberation and enlightenment. As Buddhists, we must always strive to live by the spirit of Lục Hòa in order to advance in our practice.
