Thuở xưa ở một khu rừng bên bờ sông Hằng nước Ấn Độ có một con Nai lông vàng óng ánh tuyệt đẹp, nói được tiếng người. Nai rất hiền và được sự kính mến của những súc vật khác trong rừng.
Một hôm Nai Hiền ra bờ sông xem nước lụt, bỗng nghe tiếng kêu cứu của một người bám vào khúc gỗ trôi lăn theo dòng nước chảy mạnh.
Thấy vậy động lòng thương, Nai Hiền liều mình nhảy xuống nước cứu người ấy vào bờ. Cứu xong, Nai Hiền quá mệt nhưng vẫn cố đứng cạnh chăm sóc vì nạn nhân bất tỉnh. Khi tỉnh dậy, người kia lấy làm mừng rỡ nhưng không biết ai đã hy sinh cứu mình. Ngơ ngác nhìn chung quanh chỉ thấy Nai Hiền, ông ta liền sụp lạy tạ ơn Nai. Nai bảo ông ta trở về nuôi nấng vợ con và dặn ông ta không được cho ai biết là có Nai ở đây.
Lúc bấy giờ trong cung điện, Hoàng Hậu nằm mộng thấy con Nai Hiền rất đẹp đang thuyết Pháp bằng tiếng người. Bà yêu cầu nhà Vua cho người tìm bắt Nai. Nhà Vua liền ra lệnh:
– Nếu ai bắt được Nai hoặc chỉ chỗ Nai ở sẽ được trọng thưởng.
Nghe được tin ấy, người được Nai cứu vì quá tham giải thưởng to lớn liền quên lời dặn của Nai Hiền nên dẫn nhà Vua đi bắt Nai.
Khi nhà Vua và quân lính đến chỗ Nai ở, Nai lấy làm lạ hỏi nhà Vua:
– Vì sao nhà Vua biết tôi ở đây? Nhà Vua chỉ vào người được Nai cứu và bảo:
– Chính người này đã dẫn ta đến đây. Sau đó nhà Vua nhìn vào người kia thì thấy mặt mày tự nhiên đầy máu mủ. Nai Hiền nói với Vua:
– Đó là quả báo của kẻ quên ơn người giúp mình, vì tôi đã cứu người đó khỏi chết.
Nhà Vua hiểu chuyện lấy làm tức giận, định hạ lệnh giết người kia. Nai Hiền liền xin nhà Vua tha cho người ấy. Nhà Vua cảm phục Nai Hiền nên tha cho người đó và bỏ ý định bắt Nai Hiền.
Once upon a time, in a forest near the Indus river in India, there was a deer with beautiful golden skin that could talk. All other animals in the forest respected and loved the Golden Deer for its kind heart.
One day, the Golden Deer went to the river to see the flooding, and he heard a voice asking for help — a person holding on to a log that was washed away by the strong current.
With his gentle nature, the deer could not resist helping; he jumped into the river to save the drowning man. Drained of energy after performing the good deed, the Golden Deer still cared for the unconscious victim, staying by his side. After a while, the man regained consciousness and awoke. He was very happy to be alive but did not know who had saved his life. Looking around, he saw only the Golden Deer and understood immediately. He then knelt and bowed to the Golden Deer with gratitude. The Golden Deer told him to go home to his wife and children, and asked the man not to let anyone know that the Golden Deer lived in that forest.
During that time, at the King's palace, the Queen dreamed of a Golden Deer that could talk and was spreading the Buddha's teachings. She told the King of her dream and asked that the Golden Deer be captured. Immediately the King commanded:
– “Whoever can capture the Golden Deer unharmed, or point out where it lives, will be rewarded generously.”
When the man whose life had been saved by the Golden Deer heard the news of the great reward, greed took over and he instantly forgot his promise to the Golden Deer. He guided the King to the Golden Deer's dwelling place.
After the King and his soldiers arrived, the Golden Deer asked the King with surprise:
– “How did you know where to find me?” The King pointed at the man and said:
– “He guided me here.” As he said it, he turned to look at the man and saw that his face was suddenly covered with blood. The Golden Deer spoke:
– “That is the consequence of an ungrateful action — forgetting the one who had helped him — for I saved that man from drowning.”
Understanding what had happened, the King was angry and was about to order the man to be executed. The Golden Deer then asked the King to forgive the man. The King was touched and admired the Golden Deer's compassion, so he pardoned the man and abandoned his plan to capture the Golden Deer.
