Verses of the Senior Nuns 5.4 The Book of the Fives Sundarīnandā

1.1

“Āturaṁ asuciṁ pūtiṁ,

“Nandā, see this bag of bones as

1.2

passa nande samussayaṁ;

diseased, filthy, and rotten.

1.3

Asubhāya cittaṁ bhāvehi,

With mind unified and serene,

1.4

ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ.

meditate on the ugly aspects of the body:

2.1

Yathā idaṁ tathā etaṁ,

as this is, so is that,

2.2

yathā etaṁ tathā idaṁ;

as that is, so is this.

2.3

Duggandhaṁ pūtikaṁ vāti,

A foul stink wafts from it,

2.4

bālānaṁ abhinanditaṁ.

it is the fools’ delight.”

3.1

Evametaṁ avekkhantī,

Reflecting in such a way,

3.2

rattindivamatanditā;

tireless all day and night,

3.3

Tato sakāya paññāya,

having broken through

3.4

abhinibbijjha dakkhisaṁ”.

with my own wisdom, I saw.

4.1

“Tassā me appamattāya,

Being diligent,

4.2

vicinantiyā yoniso;

rationally investigating,

4.3

Yathābhūtaṁ ayaṁ kāyo,

I truly saw this body

4.4

diṭṭho santarabāhiro.

both inside and out.

5.1

Atha nibbindahaṁ kāye,

Then, growing disillusioned with the body,

5.2

ajjhattañca virajjahaṁ;

I became dispassionate within.

5.3

Appamattā visaṁyuttā,

Diligent, detached,

5.4

upasantāmhi nibbutā”ti.

I’m quenched and at peace.
