“Jātimadena mattohaṁ,

I was drunk with the pride of birth

1.2

bhogaissariyena ca;

and wealth and authority.

1.3

Saṇṭhānavaṇṇarūpena,

I wandered about intoxicated

1.4

madamatto acārihaṁ.

with my own gorgeous body.

2.1

Nāttano samakaṁ kañci,

No one was my equal or my better—

2.2

atirekaṁ ca maññisaṁ;

or so I thought.

2.3

Atimānahato bālo,

I was such an arrogant fool,

2.4

patthaddho ussitaddhajo.

stuck up, waving my own flag.

3.1

Mātaraṁ pitarañcāpi,

I never paid homage to anyone:

3.2

aññepi garusammate;

not even my mother or father,

3.3

Na kañci abhivādesiṁ,

nor others esteemed as respectable.

3.4

mānatthaddho anādaro.

I was stiff with pride, lacking regard for others.

4.1

Disvā vināyakaṁ aggaṁ,

When I saw the foremost leader,

4.2

sārathīnaṁ varuttamaṁ;

the most excellent of charioteers,

4.3

Tapantamiva ādiccaṁ,

shining like the sun

4.4

bhikkhusaṅghapurakkhataṁ.

at the fore of the mendicant Saṅgha,

5.1

Mānaṁ madañca chaḍḍetvā,

I discarded conceit and vanity,

5.2

vippasannena cetasā;

and, with a clear and confident heart,

5.3

Sirasā abhivādesiṁ,

I bowed down with my head

5.4

sabbasattānamuttamaṁ.

to the supreme among all beings.

6.1

Atimāno ca omāno,

The conceit of superiority <j>and the conceit of inferiority

6.2

pahīnā susamūhatā;

have been given up and eradicated.

6.3

Asmimāno samucchinno,

The conceit “I am” is cut off,

6.4

sabbe mānavidhā hatā”ti.

and every kind of conceit is destroyed.
