Verses of the Senior Monks 5.7 The Book of the Fives Chapter One Gayākassapa

1.1

“Pāto majjhanhikaṁ sāyaṁ,

Three times a day—

1.2

tikkhattuṁ divasassahaṁ;

morning, midday, and evening—

1.3

Otariṁ udakaṁ sohaṁ,

I plunged into the water at Gayā

1.4

gayāya gayaphagguyā.

for the Gayā spring festival.

2.1

‘Yaṁ mayā pakataṁ pāpaṁ,

“Any bad things I’ve done

2.2

pubbe aññāsu jātisu;

in previous lives,

2.3

Taṁ dānīdha pavāhemi’,

I’ll now rinse away right here”—

2.4

evaṁdiṭṭhi pure ahuṁ.

such was the view I used to hold.

3.1

Sutvā subhāsitaṁ vācaṁ,

Having heard the fine words,

3.2

dhammatthasahitaṁ padaṁ;

a passage meaningful and principled,

3.3

Tathaṁ yāthāvakaṁ atthaṁ,

I rationally reflected

3.4

yoniso paccavekkhisaṁ.

on the true, essential goal.

4.1

Ninhātasabbapāpomhi,

I’ve washed away all bad things;

4.2

nimmalo payato suci;

I’m stainless, clean, pristine;

4.3

Suddho suddhassa dāyādo,

the pure heir of the pure one,

4.4

putto buddhassa oraso.

a bosom son of the Buddha.

5.1

Ogayhaṭṭhaṅgikaṁ sotaṁ,

When I plunged into the eightfold stream,

5.2

sabbapāpaṁ pavāhayiṁ;

all bad things were rinsed away.

5.3

Tisso vijjā ajjhagamiṁ,

I’ve attained the three knowledges

5.4

kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.

and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
