Itivuttaka 96 Tikanipāta Pañcamavagga Kāmayogasutta

So It Was Said 96 The Book of the Threes Chapter Five Yoked to Sensual Pleasures

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

2.1

“Kāmayogayutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto āgāmī hoti āgantā itthattaṁ.

“Mendicants, one yoked to both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a returner, who comes back to this place.

2.2

Kāmayogavisaṁyutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogayutto anāgāmī hoti anāgantā itthattaṁ.

One unyoked from sensual pleasures but still yoked to rebirth is a non-returner, who comes not back to this place.

2.3

Kāmayogavisaṁyutto, bhikkhave, bhavayogavisaṁyutto arahā hoti, khīṇāsavo”ti.

One unyoked from both sensual pleasures and rebirth is a perfected one, who has ended defilements.”

2.4

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

2.5

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

3.1

“Kāmayogena saṁyuttā,

“Yoked to both sensual pleasures

3.2

bhavayogena cūbhayaṁ;

and the desire to be reborn in a future life;

3.3

Sattā gacchanti saṁsāraṁ,

sentient beings continue to transmigrate,

3.4

jātimaraṇagāmino.

with ongoing birth and death.

4.1

Ye ca kāme pahantvāna,

Those who’ve given up sensual pleasures

4.2

appattā āsavakkhayaṁ;

without attaining the end of defilements,

4.3

Bhavayogena saṁyuttā,

and are still yoked to being reborn,

4.4

anāgāmīti vuccare.

are said to be non-returners.

5.1

Ye ca kho chinnasaṁsayā,

Those who have cut off doubt,

5.2

khīṇamānapunabbhavā;

and ended conceit and future lives,

5.3

Te ve pāraṅgatā loke,

they’re the ones in this world <j>who’ve truly crossed over,

5.4

ye pattā āsavakkhayan”ti.

having reached the ending of defilements.”

6.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
