Itivuttaka 56 Tikanipāta Paṭhamavagga Paṭhamaāsavasutta

So It Was Said 56 The Book of the Threes Chapter One Defilements (1st)

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

2.1

“Tayome, bhikkhave, āsavā.

“Mendicants, there are these three defilements.

2.2

Katame tayo?

What three?

2.3

Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—

The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance.

2.4

ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā”ti.

These are the three defilements.”

2.5

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

2.6

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

3.1

“Samāhito sampajāno,

“Stilled, aware,

3.2

sato buddhassa sāvako;

a mindful disciple of the Buddha

3.3

Āsave ca pajānāti,

understands defilements,

3.4

āsavānañca sambhavaṁ.

the cause of defilements,

4.1

Yattha cetā nirujjhanti,

where they cease,

4.2

maggañca khayagāminaṁ;

and the path that leads to their ending.

4.3

Āsavānaṁ khayā bhikkhu,

With the ending of defilements, a mendicant

4.4

nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.

is hungerless, quenched.”

5.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
