Itivuttaka 34 Dukanipāta Paṭhamavagga Ātāpīsutta

So It Was Said 34 The Book of the Twos Chapter One Keen

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

2.1

“Anātāpī, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anottāpī abhabbo sambodhāya, abhabbo nibbānāya, abhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāya.

“Mendicants, without being keen and prudent a mendicant can’t achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

2.2

Ātāpī ca kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu ottāpī bhabbo sambodhāya, bhabbo nibbānāya, bhabbo anuttarassa yogakkhemassa adhigamāyā”ti.

But if a mendicant is keen and prudent they can achieve awakening, extinguishment, and the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.”

2.3

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

2.4

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

3.1

“Anātāpī anottāpī,

“Neither keen nor prudent,

3.2

kusīto hīnavīriyo;

lazy, lacking energy,

3.3

Yo thinamiddhabahulo,

full of dullness and drowsiness,

3.4

ahirīko anādaro;

unconscientious, lacking regard for others,

3.5

Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu,

such a mendicant is incapable

3.6

phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.

of experiencing the highest awakening.

4.1

Yo ca satimā nipako jhāyī,

One who is mindful, alert, meditative,

4.2

Ātāpī ottāpī ca appamatto;

keen, prudent, and diligent,

4.3

Saṁyojanaṁ jātijarāya chetvā,

having cut the fetter of birth and old age,

4.4

Idheva sambodhimanuttaraṁ phuse”ti.

would experience supreme awakening <j>in this very life.”

5.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
