Itivuttaka 16 Ekakanipāta Dutiyavagga Paṭhamasekhasutta

So It Was Said 16 The Book of the Ones Chapter Two A Trainee (1st)

1.1

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

2.1

“Sekhassa, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno appattamānasassa anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ patthayamānassa viharato ajjhattikaṁ aṅganti karitvā nāññaṁ ekaṅgampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ bahūpakāraṁ yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikāro.

“Taking into account interior factors, mendicants, I do not see a single one that is so very helpful as rational application of mind for a trainee mendicant who hasn’t achieved their heart’s desire, but lives aspiring to the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

2.2

Yoniso, bhikkhave, bhikkhu manasi karonto akusalaṁ pajahati, kusalaṁ bhāvetī”ti.

A mendicant rationally applying the mind gives up the unskillful and develops the skillful.”

2.3

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

The Buddha spoke this matter.

2.4

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

On this it is said:

3.1

“Yonisomanasikāro,

“There is nothing so helpful

3.2

dhammo sekhassa bhikkhuno;

for a trainee mendicant

3.3

Natthañño evaṁ bahukāro,

aspiring for the ultimate goal

3.4

uttamatthassa pattiyā;

as rational application of mind.

3.5

Yoniso padahaṁ bhikkhu,

Striving rationally, a mendicant

3.6

khayaṁ dukkhassa pāpuṇe”ti.

attains the end of suffering.”

4.1

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
