Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Bālavagga Aññatarapurisavatthu

Ðêm dài cho kẻ thức,

Dīghā jāgarato ratti,

Long is the night for the wakeful;

Ðường dài cho kẻ mệt,

dīghaṁ santassa yojanaṁ;

long is the league for the weary;

Luân hồi dài, kẻ ngu,

Dīgho bālāna saṁsāro,

long transmigrate the fools

Không biết chơn diệu pháp.

saddhammaṁ avijānataṁ.

who don’t understand the true teaching.

Chuyện đệ tử của Trưởng lão Mahā Kassapa (Ca-diếp)

Mahākassapasaddhivihārikavatthu

Tìm không được bạn đường,

Carañce nādhigaccheyya,

If while wandering you find no partner

Hơn mình hay bằng mình,

Seyyaṁ sadisamattano;

equal or better than yourself,

Thà quyết sống một mình,

Ekacariyaṁ daḷhaṁ kayirā,

then firmly resolve to wander alone—

Không làm bạn kẻ ngu.

Natthi bāle sahāyatā.

there’s no fellowship with fools.

Chuyện Trưởng giả Ānanda

Ānandaseṭṭhivatthu

“Con tôi, tài sản tôi”,

Puttā matthi dhanaṁ matthi,

“Sons are mine, wealth is mine”—

Người ngu sanh ưu não,

iti bālo vihaññati;

thus the fool frets.

Tự ta, ta không có,

Attā hi attano natthi,

For even your self is not your own,

Con đâu, tài sản đâu?

kuto puttā kuto dhanaṁ.

let alone your sons or wealth.

Gaṇṭhibhedakacoravatthu

Người ngu nghĩ mình ngu,

Yo bālo maññati bālyaṁ,

The fool who thinks they’re a fool

Nhờ vậy thành có trí.

paṇḍito vāpi tena so;

is wise at least to that extent.

Người ngu tưởng có trí,

Bālo ca paṇḍitamānī,

But the true fool is said to be one

Thật xứng gọi chí ngu.

sa ve “bālo”ti vuccati.

who imagines that they are wise.

Udāyittheravatthu

Người ngu, dầu trọn đời,

Yāvajīvampi ce bālo,

Though a fool attends to the wise

Thân cận người có trí,

paṇḍitaṁ payirupāsati;

even for the rest of their life,

Không biết được Chánh pháp,

Na so dhammaṁ vijānāti,

they still don’t understand the teaching,

Như muỗng với vị canh.

dabbī sūparasaṁ yathā.

like a spoon the taste of the soup.

Tiṁsapāveyyakabhikkhuvatthu

Người trí, dù một khắc,

Muhuttamapi ce viññū,

If a clever person attends to the wise

Thân cận người có trí,

paṇḍitaṁ payirupāsati;

even just for an hour or so,

Biết ngay chân diệu pháp,

Khippaṁ dhammaṁ vijānāti,

they swiftly understand the teaching,

Như lưỡi với vị canh.

jivhā sūparasaṁ yathā.

like a tongue the taste of the soup.

Suppabuddhakuṭṭhivatthu

Người ngu si thiếu trí,

Caranti bālā dummedhā,

Fools and simpletons behave

Tự ngã thành kẻ thù.

amitteneva attanā;

like their own worst enemies,

Làm các nghiệp không thiện,

Karontā pāpakaṁ kammaṁ,

doing wicked deeds

Phải chịu quả đắng cay.

yaṁ hoti kaṭukapphalaṁ.

that ripen as bitter fruit.

Kassakavatthu

Nghiệp làm không chánh thiện,

Na taṁ kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,

It’s not good to do a deed

Làm rồi sanh ăn năn,

yaṁ katvā anutappati;

that plagues you later on,

Mặt nhuốm lệ, khóc than,

Yassa assumukho rodaṁ,

for which you weep and wail,

Lãnh chịu quả dị thục.

vipākaṁ paṭisevati.

as its effect stays with you.

Sumanamālākāravatthu

Và nghiệp làm chánh thiện,

Tañca kammaṁ kataṁ sādhu,

It is good to do a deed

Làm rồi không ăn năn,

yaṁ katvā nānutappati;

that doesn’t plague you later on,

Hoan hỷ, ý đẹp lòng,

Yassa patīto sumano,

that gladdens and cheers,

Hưởng thọ quả dị thục.

vipākaṁ paṭisevati.

as its effect stays with you.

Uppalavaṇṇattherīvatthu

Người ngu nghĩ là ngọt,

Madhuṁvā maññati bālo,

The fool imagines that evil is sweet,

Khi ác chưa chín muồi;

yāva pāpaṁ na paccati;

so long as it has not yet ripened.

Ác nghiệp chín muồi rồi,

Yadā ca paccati pāpaṁ,

But as soon as that evil ripens,

Người ngu chịu khổ đau.

atha dukkhaṁ nigacchati.

they fall into suffering.

Jambukattheravatthu

Tháng tháng với ngọn cỏ,

Māse māse kusaggena,

Month after month a fool may eat

Người ngu có ăn uống

bālo bhuñjeyya bhojanaṁ;

food from a grass-blade’s tip;

Không bằng phần mười sáu,

Na so saṅkhātadhammānaṁ,

but they’ll never be worth a sixteenth part

Người hiểu pháp hữu vi.

kalaṁ agghati soḷasiṁ.

of one who has appraised the teaching.

Nghiệp ác đã được làm,

Na hi pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ,

For a wicked deed that has been done

Như sữa, không đông ngay,

Sajjukhīraṁva muccati;

does not curdle quickly like milk.

Cháy ngầm theo kẻ ngu,

Ḍahantaṁ bālamanveti,

Smoldering, it follows the fool,

Như lửa tro che đậy.

Bhasmacchannova pāvako.

like a fire smothered over with ash.

Chuyện ngạ quỷ bị búa đập đầu

Saṭṭhikūṭapetavatthu

Tự nó chịu bất hạnh,

Yāvadeva anatthāya,

Whatever fame a fool may get,

Khi danh đến kẻ ngu.

ñattaṁ bālassa jāyati;

it only gives rise to harm.

Vận may bị tổn hại,

Hanti bālassa sukkaṁsaṁ,

Whatever good features they have it ruins,

Ðầu nó bị nát tan.

muddhamassa vipātayaṁ.

and blows their head into bits.

Cittagahapativatthu

Ưa danh không tương xứng,

Asantaṁ bhāvanamiccheyya,

They’d seek the esteem that they lack,

Muốn ngồi trước tỳ-kheo,

Purekkhārañca bhikkhusu;

and status among the mendicants;

ưa quyền tại tịnh xá,

Āvāsesu ca issariyaṁ,

authority over monasteries,

Muốn mọi người lễ kính.

Pūjaṁ parakulesu ca.

and honor among other families.

“Mong cả hai tăng, tục,

Mameva kata maññantu,

“Let both layfolk and renunciants think

Nghĩ rằng chính ta làm.

gihī pabbajitā ubho;

the work was done by me alone.

Trong mọi việc lớn nhỏ,

Mamevātivasā assu,

In anything at all that’s to be done,

Phải theo mệnh lệnh ta”

kiccākiccesu kismici;

let them fall under my sway alone.”

Người ngu nghĩ như vậy

Iti bālassa saṅkappo,

So thinks the fool,

Dục và mạn tăng trưởng.

icchā māno ca vaḍḍhati.

their greed and pride only growing.

Vanavāsitissasāmaṇeravatthu

Khác thay duyên thế lợi,

Aññā hi lābhūpanisā,

For the means to profit and the path to quenching

Khác thay đường Niết-bàn.

aññā nibbānagāminī;

are two quite different things.

Tỳ-kheo, đệ tử Phật,

Evametaṁ abhiññāya,

A mendicant disciple of the Buddha,

Hãy như vậy thắng tri.

bhikkhu buddhassa sāvako;

understanding what this really means,

Chớ ưa thích cung kính,

Sakkāraṁ nābhinandeyya,

would never delight in honors,

Hãy tu hạnh viễn ly.

vivekamanubrūhaye.

but rather would foster seclusion.
