Ko dhammapadaṁ sudesitaṁ,

Who sets out the well-taught word of truth,

Như người khéo hái hoa?

Kusalo pupphamiva pacessati.

Hữu học chinh phục đất,

Sekho pathaviṁ vicessati,

A trainee bestirs this earth,

Dạ ma, Thiên giới này.

Marīcikammaṭṭhānikabhikkhuvatthu

Biết thân như bọt nước,

Pheṇūpamaṁ kāyamimaṁ viditvā,

Knowing this body’s like foam,

Ngộ thân là như huyễn,

Marīcidhammaṁ abhisambudhāno;

realizing it’s all just a mirage,

Bẻ tên hoa của Ma,

Chetvāna mārassa papupphakāni,

and cutting off Māra’s blossoming,

Vượt tầm mắt Thần chết.

Adassanaṁ maccurājassa gacche.

vanish from the King of Death.

Người nhặt các loại hoa,

Pupphāni heva pacinantaṁ,

As a mighty flood sweeps off a sleeping village,

Ý đắm say, tham nhiễm,

byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;

death steals away a man

Bị Thần chết mang đi,

Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova,

even as he gathers flowers,

Như lụt trôi làng ngủ.

maccu ādāya gacchati.

his mind caught up in them.

Patipūjikakumārivatthu

Người nhặt các loại hoa,

Pupphāni heva pacinantaṁ,

The terminator gains control of the man

Ý đắm say, tham nhiễm,

byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;

who has not had his fill of pleasures,

Các dục chưa thỏa mãn,

Atittaññeva kāmesu,

even as he gathers flowers,

Ðã bị chết chinh phục.

antako kurute vasaṁ.

his mind caught up in them.

Macchariyakosiyaseṭṭhivatthu

Như ong đến với hoa,

Yathāpi bhamaro pupphaṁ,

A bee takes the nectar

Không hại sắc và hương,

vaṇṇagandhamaheṭhayaṁ;

and moves on, doing no damage

Che chở hoa, lấy nhụy.

Paleti rasamādāya,

to the flower’s beauty and fragrance;

Bậc Thánh đi vào làng.

evaṁ gāme munī care.

and that’s how a sage should walk in the village.

Chuyện tu sĩ ngoại đạo Pāṭika (Tiểu Điệp)

Pāveyyaājīvakavatthu

Không nên nhìn lỗi người,

Na paresaṁ vilomāni,

Don’t find fault with others,

Người làm hay không làm.

na paresaṁ katākataṁ;

with what they’ve done or left undone.

Nên nhìn tự chính mình,

Attanova avekkheyya,

You should only watch yourself,

Có làm hay không làm.

katāni akatāni ca.

what you’ve done or left undone.

Chuyện thiện nam tử Chattapāṇi (Tản Thủ)

Chattapāṇiupāsakavatthu

Như bông hoa tươi đẹp,

Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,

Just like a glorious flower

Có sắc nhưng không hương.

vaṇṇavantaṁ agandhakaṁ;

that’s colorful but lacks fragrance;

Cũng vậy, lời khéo nói,

Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,

eloquent speech is fruitless

Không làm, không kết quả.

aphalā hoti akubbato.

for one who does not act on it.

Như bông hoa tươi đẹp,

Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,

Just like a glorious flower

Có sắc lại thêm hương;

Vaṇṇavantaṁ sagandhakaṁ;

that’s both colorful and fragrant,

Cũng vậy, lời khéo nói,

Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,

eloquent speech is fruitful

Có làm, có kết quả.

Saphalā hoti kubbato.

for one who acts on it.

Visākhāvatthu

Như từ một đống hoa,

Yathāpi puppharāsimhā,

Just as one would create many garlands

kayirā mālāguṇe bahū;

from a heap of flowers,

Cũng vậy, thân sanh tử,

Evaṁ jātena maccena,

when a person has come to be born,

Làm được nhiều thiện sự.

kattabbaṁ kusalaṁ bahuṁ.

they should do many skillful things.

Hương các loại hoa thơm

Na pupphagandho paṭivātameti,

The fragrance of flowers doesn’t spread upwind,

Không ngược bay chiều gió

Na candanaṁ tagaramallikā vā;

nor sandalwood, pinwheel, or jasmine;

Nhưng hương người đức hạnh Ngược gió khắp tung bay

Satañca gandho paṭivātameti,

but the fragrance of the good spreads upwind;

Chỉ có bậc chân nhân Toả khắp mọi phương trời.

Sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyati.

a true person’s virtue spreads in every direction.

Hoa chiên đàn, già la,

Candanaṁ tagaraṁ vāpi,

Among all the fragrances—

Hoa sen, hoa vũ quý.

uppalaṁ atha vassikī;

sandalwood or pinwheel

Giữa những hương hoa ấy,

Etesaṁ gandhajātānaṁ,

or lotus or jasmine—

Giới hương là vô thượng.

sīlagandho anuttaro.

the fragrance of virtue is supreme.

Mahākassapattherapiṇḍapātadinnavatthu

Ít giá trị hương này,

Appamatto ayaṁ gandho,

Faint is the fragrance

Hương già la, chiên đàn;

yāyaṁ tagaracandanī;

of sandal or pinwheel;

Yo ca sīlavataṁ gandho,

but the fragrance of the virtuous

Tối thượng tỏa Thiên giới.

vāti devesu uttamo.

floats to the highest gods.

Godhikattheraparinibbānavatthu

Giữa ai có giới hạnh,

Tesaṁ sampannasīlānaṁ,

For those accomplished in ethics,

An trú không phóng dật.

appamādavihārinaṁ;

meditating diligently,

Chánh trí, chơn giải thoát,

Sammadaññāvimuttānaṁ,

freed through the highest knowledge,

Ác ma không thấy đường.

māro maggaṁ na vindati.

Māra cannot find their path.

Như giữa đống rác nhớp,

Yathā saṅkāradhānasmiṁ,

From a heap of trash

Quăng bỏ trên đường lớn,

ujjhitasmiṁ mahāpathe;

discarded on the highway,

Chỗ ấy hoa sen nở,

Padumaṁ tattha jāyetha,

a lotus might blossom,

Thơm sạch, đẹp ý người.

sucigandhaṁ manoramaṁ.

fragrant and delightful.

Cũng vậy giữa quần sanh,

Evaṁ saṅkārabhūtesu,

So too, among those thought of as trash,

Uế nhiễm, mù, phàm tục,

andhabhūte puthujjane;

a disciple of the perfect Buddha

Ðệ tử bậc Chánh Giác,

Atirocati paññāya,

outshines with their wisdom

Sáng ngời với Tuệ Tri.
