Hỡi này Bà-la-môn, Hãy tinh tấn đoạn lòng,

Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma,

Cut the stream, striving!

kāme panuda brāhmaṇa;

Cast aside sensual pleasures, brahmin.

Biết được hành đoạn diệt,

Saṅkhārānaṁ khayaṁ ñatvā,

Knowing the ending of conditions,

Nhờ thường trú hai pháp

Yadā dvayesu dhammesu,

When a brahmin has gone beyond

pāragū hoti brāhmaṇo;

dualistic phenomena,

Athassa sabbe saṁyogā,

then they consciously

Mọi kiết sử dứt sạch.

atthaṁ gacchanti jānato.

make an end of all fetters.

Không bờ này, bờ kia

Yassa pāraṁ apāraṁ vā,

One for whom there is no crossing over

Cả hai bờ không có,

pārāpāraṁ na vijjati;

or crossing back, or crossing over and back;

Lìa khổ, không trói buộc

Vītaddaraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ,

stress-free, detached,

Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ,

arrived at the highest goal:

Mặt trời sáng ban ngày,

Divā tapati ādicco,

Khí giới sáng Sát-lỵ,

Sannaddho khattiyo tapati,

the aristocrat shines in armor,

Thiền định sáng Phạm chí.

jhāyī tapati brāhmaṇo;

and the brahmin shines in absorption.

Còn hào quang đức Phật,

Atha sabbamahorattiṁ,

But all day and all night,

Chói sáng cả ngày đêm.

buddho tapati tejasā.

the Buddha blazes with glory.

Chuyện một người xuất gia

Aññatarabrāhmaṇapabbajitavatthu

Dứt ác gọi Phạm chí,

Bāhitapāpoti brāhmaṇo,

A brahmin’s so-called <j>since they’ve banished evil,

Tịnh hạnh gọi Sa-môn,

Samacariyā samaṇoti vuccati;

an ascetic’s so-called <j>since they live a serene life.

Tự mình xuất cấu uế,

Pabbājayamattano malaṁ,

One who has renounced all stains

Nên gọi bậc xuất gia.

Tasmā “pabbajito”ti vuccati.

is said to be a “renunciant”.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Sāriputta (Xá-lợi-phất)

Sāriputtattheravatthu

Chớ có đập Phạm chí!

Na brāhmaṇassa pahareyya,

One should never strike a brahmin,

Phạm chí chớ đập lại!

nāssa muñcetha brāhmaṇo;

nor should a brahmin retaliate.

Xấu thay đập Phạm chí

Dhī brāhmaṇassa hantāraṁ,

Woe to the one who hurts a brahmin,

Đập trả lại xấu hơn!

tato dhī yassa muñcati.

and woe for the one who retaliates.

Đối vị Bà-la-môn, Đây không lợi ích nhỏ.

Na brāhmaṇassetadakiñci seyyo,

Nothing is better for a brahmin

Khi ý không ái luyến,

Yadā nisedho manaso piyehi;

than to hold their mind back from attachment.

Tâm hại được chận đứng,

Yato yato hiṁsamano nivattati,

From wherever a cruel wish recoils,

Chỉ khi ấy khổ diệt,

Tato tato sammatimeva dukkhaṁ.

right there suffering subsides.

Mahāpajāpatigotamīvatthu

Với người thân miệng ý,

Yassa kāyena vācāya,

Who does nothing wrong

Không làm các ác hạnh

manasā natthi dukkaṭaṁ;

by body, speech or mind,

Ba nghiệp được phòng hộ,

Saṁvutaṁ tīhi ṭhānehi,

restrained in these three respects,

the one from whom you learn the Dhamma

Hãy kính lễ vị ấy,

Sakkaccaṁ taṁ namasseyya,

taught by the awakened Buddha,

Như phạm chí thờ lửa.

aggihuttaṁva brāhmaṇo.

as a brahmin honors the sacred flame.

Jaṭilabrāhmaṇavatthu

Được gọi Bà-la-môn, Không vì đầu bện tóc,

Na jaṭāhi na gottena,

Not by matted hair or family,

Không chủng tộc, thọ sanh,

na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo;

or birth is one a brahmin.

Ai thật chân, chánh, tịnh,

Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca,

Those who are truthful and principled:

Mới gọi Bà-la-môn.

so sucī so ca brāhmaṇo.

they are pure, they are brahmins.

Chuyện Bà-la-môn Kuhaka

Kuhakabrāhmaṇavatthu

Kẻ ngu, có ích gì

Kiṁ te jaṭāhi dummedha,

Why the matted hair, you simpleton,

Bện tóc với da dê,

kiṁ te ajinasāṭiyā;

and why the skin of deer?

Nội tâm toàn phiền não,

Abbhantaraṁ te gahanaṁ,

The tangle is inside you,

Ngoài mặt đánh bóng suông.

bāhiraṁ parimajjasi.

yet you polish up your outsides.

Kisāgotamīvatthu

Người mặc áo đống rác,

Paṁsukūladharaṁ jantuṁ,

A personage who wears robes of rags,

Gầy ốm, lộ mạch gân,

kisaṁ dhamanisanthataṁ;

lean, their limbs showing veins,

Độc thân thiền trong rừng.

Ekaṁ vanasmiṁ jhāyantaṁ,

meditating alone in the forest,

yonijaṁ mattisambhavaṁ;

after the mother’s womb they’re born from.

Chỉ được gọi tên suông

Bhovādi nāma so hoti,

If they still have attachments,

Nếu tâm còn phiền não.

sace hoti sakiñcano;

they’re just someone who says “worthy”.

Không phiền não, chấp trước

Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,

Having nothing, taking nothing:

Ta gọi Bà-la-môn.

sandānaṁ sahanukkamaṁ;

the halter and bridle too,

Bỏ then chốt, sáng suốt,

Ukkhittapalighaṁ buddhaṁ,

with cross-bar lifted, they’re awakened:

Akkosakabhāradvājavatthu

Không ác ý, nhẫn chịu,

Abuse, killing, caging:

Phỉ báng, đánh, phạt hình,

aduṭṭho yo titikkhati;

they endure these without anger.

Lấy nhẫn làm quân lực,

Khantībalaṁ balānīkaṁ,

Patience is their powerful army:

Người không nhiễm ái dục,

Yo na limpati kāmesu,

sensual pleasures slip off them:

maggāmaggassa kovidaṁ;

expert in the path and what is not the path;

Chứng đạt đích vô thượng,

Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ,

arrived at the highest goal:

householders nor the homeless;

Sống độc thân, ít dục,

Anokasārimappicchaṁ,

a migrant with no bastion, few in wishes:

against creatures firm and frail;

Không giết, không bảo giết,

Yo na hanti na ghāteti,

not killing or making others kill:

Thân thiện giữa thù địch

quenched among those who have taken up arms,

Không nhiễm, giữa nhiễm trước,

Sādānesu anādānaṁ,

not grasping among those who grasp:

Yāya nābhisaje kañci,

and don’t offend anyone:

Loke adinnaṁ nādiyati,

tiny or huge, beautiful or ugly:

They’re quenched by not grasping:

They’ve thrown off the human yoke,

Vượt trói buộc cõi trời.

dibbaṁ yogaṁ upaccagā;

and slipped out of the heavenly yoke;

Giải thoát mọi buộc ràng,

Sabbayogavisaṁyuttaṁ,

unyoked from all yokes:

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo đã từng khiêu vũ

Naṭaputtakattheravatthu

Bỏ điều ưa, điều ghét,

Giving up desire and discontent,

Mát lạnh, diệt sanh y

sītibhūtaṁ nirūpadhiṁ;

they’re cooled and free of attachments;

Bậc anh hùng chiến thắng, Nhiếp phục mọi thế giới,

Sabbalokābhibhuṁ vīraṁ,

a hero, master of the whole world:

Ai hiểu rõ hoàn toàn

and rebirth of all beings;

Không nhiễm, khéo vượt qua, Sáng suốt chân giác ngộ,

Asattaṁ sugataṁ buddhaṁ,

unattached, holy, awakened:

Với ai, loài trời, người Cùng với Càn-thát-bà,

Yassa gatiṁ na jānanti,

Gods, centaurs, and humans

Không biết chỗ thọ sanh

devā gandhabbamānusā;

don’t know their destiny;

Lậu tận bậc La-hán.

Khīṇāsavaṁ arahantaṁ,

the perfected ones with defilements ended:

Ta gọi Bà-la-môn.

Ai quá, hiện, vị lai

Không sở hữu không nắm,

Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ,

Having nothing, taking nothing:

Bậc chiến thắng, không nhiễm,

mahesiṁ vijitāvinaṁ;

great seer and victor;

Bậc tẩy sạch, giác ngộ,

Anejaṁ nhātakaṁ buddhaṁ,

unstirred, washed, awakened:

Devahitabrāhmaṇavatthu

Ai biết được đời trước,

Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedi,

saggāpāyañca passati;

sees heaven and places of loss,

Đạt được sanh diệt tận

Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,

and has attained the end of rebirth;

Thắng trí, tự viên thành Bậc mâu-ni đạo sĩ.

abhiññāvosito muni;

a sage of perfect insight

Viên mãn mọi thành tựu

Sabbavositavosānaṁ,

at the summit of spiritual perfection:

Ettāvatā sabbapaṭhame yamakavagge cuddasa vatthūni, appamādavagge nava, cittavagge nava, pupphavagge dvādasa, bālavagge pannarasa, paṇḍitavagge ekādasa, arahantavagge dasa, sahassavagge cuddasa, pāpavagge dvādasa, daṇḍavagge ekādasa, jarāvagge nava, attavagge dasa, lokavagge ekādasa, buddhavagge nava, sukhavagge aṭṭha, piyavagge nava, kodhavagge aṭṭha, malavagge dvādasa, dhammaṭṭhavagge dasa, maggavagge dvādasa, pakiṇṇakavagge nava, nirayavagge nava, nāgavagge aṭṭha, taṇhāvagge dvādasa, bhikkhuvagge dvādasa, brāhmaṇavagge cattālīsāti pañcādhikāni tīṇi vatthusatāni.

Satevīsacatussatā,

catusaccavibhāvinā;

Satattayañca vatthūnaṁ,

pañcādhikaṁ samuṭṭhitāti.

Dhammapade vaggānamuddānaṁ

Yamakappamādo cittaṁ,

pupphaṁ bālena paṇḍito;

Arahanto sahassañca,

pāpaṁ daṇḍena te dasa.

Jarā attā ca loko ca,

buddho sukhaṁ piyena ca;

Kodho malañca dhammaṭṭho,

maggavaggena vīsati.

Pakiṇṇaṁ nirayo nāgo,

taṇhā bhikkhu ca brāhmaṇo;

Ete chabbīsati vaggā,

desitādiccabandhunā.

Gāthānamuddānaṁ

Yamake vīsati gāthā,

appamādamhi dvādasa;

Ekādasa cittavagge,

pupphavaggamhi soḷasa.

Bāle ca soḷasa gāthā,

paṇḍitamhi catuddasa;

Arahante dasa gāthā,

sahasse honti soḷasa.

Terasa pāpavaggamhi,

daṇḍamhi dasa satta ca;

Ekādasa jarā vagge,

attavaggamhi tā dasa.

Dvādasa lokavaggamhi,

buddhavaggamhi ṭhārasa;

Sukhe ca piyavagge ca,

gāthāyo honti dvādasa.

Cuddasa kodhavaggamhi,

malavaggekavīsati;

maggavagge sattarasa.

Pakiṇṇe soḷasa gāthā,
