Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Bhikkhuvagga Pañcabhikkhuvatthu

Lành thay, phòng hộ mắt!

Cakkhunā saṁvaro sādhu,

Restraint of the eye is good;

Lành thay, phòng hộ tai!

sādhu sotena saṁvaro;

good is restraint of the ear;

Lành thay, phòng hộ mũi!

Ghānena saṁvaro sādhu,

restraint of the nose is good;

Lành thay, phòng hộ lưỡi.

sādhu jivhāya saṁvaro.

good is restraint of the tongue.

Lành thay phòng hộ thân!

Kāyena saṁvaro sādhu,

Restraint of the body is good;

Lành thay, phòng hộ lời,

sādhu vācāya saṁvaro;

good is restraint of speech;

Lành thay, phòng hộ ý.

Manasā saṁvaro sādhu,

restraint of mind is good;

Lành thay, phòng tất cả.

sādhu sabbattha saṁvaro;

everywhere, restraint is good.

Tỳ-kheo phòng tất cả,

Sabbattha saṁvuto bhikkhu,

The mendicant restrained everywhere

Thoát được mọi khổ đau.

sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

is released from all suffering.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo giết hạc

Haṁsaghātakabhikkhuvatthu

Người chế ngự tay chân,

Hatthasaṁyato pādasaṁyato,

One restrained in hand and foot,

Chế ngự lời và đầu,

Vācāsaṁyato saṁyatuttamo;

and in speech, the supreme restraint;

Vui thích nội thiền định,

Ajjhattarato samāhito,

happy inside, serene,

Ðộc thân, biết vừa đủ, Thật xứng gọi tỳ-kheo.

Eko santusito tamāhu bhikkhuṁ.

solitary, content, I call a mendicant.

Chuyện Tỳ-kheo Kokālika

Kokālikavatthu

Tỳ-kheo chế ngự miệng,

Yo mukhasaṁyato bhikkhu,

When a mendicant of restrained mouth,

Vừa lời, không cống cao,

mantabhāṇī anuddhato;

thoughtful in counsel, not restless,

Khi trình bày pháp nghĩa,

Atthaṁ dhammañca dīpeti,

explains the text and its meaning,

Lời lẽ dịu ngọt ngào.

madhuraṁ tassa bhāsitaṁ.

their words are sweet.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Dhammārāma

Dhammārāmattheravatthu

Vị tỳ-kheo thích Pháp,

Dhammārāmo dhammarato,

Delighting in the teaching, enjoying the teaching,

Mến pháp, suy tư Pháp.

dhammaṁ anuvicintayaṁ;

contemplating the teaching,

Tâm tư niệm chánh Pháp,

Dhammaṁ anussaraṁ bhikkhu,

a mendicant who recollects the teaching

Không rời bỏ chánh Pháp.

saddhammā na parihāyati.

doesn’t fall away from the true teaching.

Chuyện 2 Tỳ-kheo đối nghịch

Vipakkhasevakabhikkhuvatthu

Không khinh điều mình được,

Salābhaṁ nātimaññeyya,

A well-off mendicant ought not look down

Không ganh người khác được,

nāññesaṁ pihayaṁ care;

on others, nor should they be envious.

Tỳ-kheo ganh tỵ người,

Aññesaṁ pihayaṁ bhikkhu,

A mendicant who envies others

Không sao chứng Thiền định.

samādhiṁ nādhigacchati.

does not achieve immersion.

Tỳ-kheo dù được ít,

Appalābhopi ce bhikkhu,

If a mendicant is poor in offerings,

Không khinh điều mình được,

salābhaṁ nātimaññati;

the well-to-do ought not look down on them.

Sống thanh tịnh không nhác,

Taṁ ve devā pasaṁsanti,

For the gods indeed praise them,

Chư thiên khen vị này.

suddhājīviṁ atanditaṁ.

who are tireless and pure of livelihood.

Chuyện Bà-la-môn Pañcaggadāyaka

Pañcaggadāyakabrāhmaṇavatthu

Hoàn toàn, đối danh sắc,

Sabbaso nāmarūpasmiṁ,

One who has no sense of ownership

Không chấp Ta, của Ta.

yassa natthi mamāyitaṁ;

in the whole realm of name and form,

Không chấp, không sầu não.

Asatā ca na socati,

who does not grieve for that which is not,

Thật xứng danh Tỳ-kheo.

sa ve “bhikkhū”ti vuccati.

is said to be a mendicant.

Chuyện chư Tỳ-kheo

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Tỳ-kheo trú Từ Bi,

Mettāvihārī yo bhikkhu,

A mendicant who meditates on love,

Tín thành giáo Pháp Phật,

pasanno buddhasāsane;

devoted to the Buddha’s teaching,

Chứng cảnh giới tịch tỉnh.

Adhigacche padaṁ santaṁ,

would realize the peaceful state,

Các hạnh an tịnh lạc.

saṅkhārūpasamaṁ sukhaṁ.

the blissful stilling of conditions.

Tỳ-kheo, tát thuyền này,

Siñca bhikkhu imaṁ nāvaṁ,

Bail out this boat, mendicant!

Thuyền không, nhẹ đi mau.

sittā te lahumessati;

When bailed out it will float lightly.

Trừ tham, diệt sân hận,

Chetvā rāgañca dosañca,

Having cut off desire and hate,

Tất chứng đạt Niết-bàn.

tato nibbānamehisi.

you shall reach extinguishment.

Ðoạn năm, từ bỏ năm,

Pañca chinde pañca jahe,

Five to cut, five to drop,

Tu tập năm tối thượng,

pañca cuttari bhāvaye;

and five more to develop.

Tỳ-kheo cắt năm trói,

Pañca saṅgātigo bhikkhu,

When a mendicant slips five chains

Xứng danh vượt “bộc lưu”.

“oghatiṇṇo”ti vuccati.

they’re said to have crossed the flood.

Tỳ-kheo, hãy tu thiền, Chớ buông lung phóng dật,

Jhāya bhikkhu mā pamādo,

Practice absorption, don’t be negligent!

Tâm chớ đắm say dục,

Mā te kāmaguṇe ramessu cittaṁ;

Don’t let the mind delight in the senses!

Phóng dật, nuốt sắt nóng

Mā lohaguḷaṁ gilī pamatto,

Don’t heedlessly swallow a hot iron ball!

Bị đốt, chớ than khổ!

Mā kandi “dukkhamidan”ti dayhamāno.

And when it burns, don’t cry, “Oh, the pain!”

Không trí tuệ, không thiền,

Natthi jhānaṁ apaññassa,

No absorption for one without wisdom,

Không thiền, không trí tuệ.

paññā natthi ajhāyato;

no wisdom for one without absorption.

Người có thiền có tuệ,

Yamhi jhānañca paññā ca,

But one with absorption and wisdom—

Nhất định gần Niết-bàn.

sa ve nibbānasantike.

they have truly drawn near to extinguishment.

Bước vào ngôi nhà trống,

Suññāgāraṁ paviṭṭhassa,

A mendicant who enters an empty hut

Tỳ-kheo tâm an tịnh,

santacittassa bhikkhuno;

with mind at peace

Thọ hưởng vui siêu nhân,

Amānusī rati hoti,

finds a superhuman delight

Tịnh quán theo chánh pháp.

sammā dhammaṁ vipassato.

as they rightly discern the Dhamma.

Người luôn luôn chánh niệm,

Yato yato sammasati,

Whenever they are mindful

Sự sanh diệt các uẩn,

khandhānaṁ udayabbayaṁ;

of the rise and fall of the aggregates,

Ðược hoan hỷ, hân hoan,

Labhatī pītipāmojjaṁ,

they feel rapture and joy:

Chỉ bậc bất tử biết.

amataṁ taṁ vijānataṁ.

that is freedom from death for one who knows.

Ðây Tỳ-kheo có trí,

Tatrāyamādi bhavati,

This is the very start of the path

Tu tập pháp căn bản

idha paññassa bhikkhuno;

for a wise mendicant here:

Hộ căn, biết vừa đủ,

Indriyagutti santuṭṭhi,

guarding the senses, contentment,

Gìn giữ căn bản giới,

pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro.

and restraint in the monastic code.

Thường gần gũi bạn lành,

Mitte bhajassu kalyāṇe,

Mix with spiritual friends,

Sống thanh tịnh tinh cần.

suddhājīve atandite;

who are tireless and pure of livelihood.

Giao thiệp khéo thân thiện,

Paṭisanthāravutyassa,

Share what you have with others,

Cử chỉ mực đoan trang.

ācārakusalo siyā;

being skillful in your conduct.

Do vậy hưởng vui nhiều,

Tato pāmojjabahulo,

And when you’re full of joy,

Sẽ dứt mọi khổ đau.

dukkhassantaṁ karissati.

you’ll make an end to suffering.

Chuyện 500 vị Tỳ-kheo

Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu

Như hoa Vassika,

Vassikā viya pupphāni,

As a jasmine sheds

Quăng bỏ cánh úa tàn,

maddavāni pamuñcati;

its withered flowers,

Cũng vậy vị Tỳ-kheo,

Evaṁ rāgañca dosañca,

O mendicants,

Hãy giải thoát tham sân.

vippamuñcetha bhikkhavo.

shed greed and hate.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Santakāya

Santakāyattheravatthu

Thân tịnh, lời an tịnh,

Santakāyo santavāco,

Calm in body, calm in speech,

An tịnh, khéo thiền tịnh.

santavā susamāhito;

peaceful and serene;

Tỳ-kheo bỏ thế vật,

Vantalokāmiso bhikkhu,

a mendicant who’s spat out the world’s bait

Xứng danh bậc tịch tịnh.

“upasanto”ti vuccati.

is said to be one at peace.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Naṇgalakūṭa

Naṅgalakulattheravatthu

Tự mình chỉ trích mình,

Attanā codayattānaṁ,

Urge yourself on,

Tự mình dò xét mình,

paṭimaṁsetha attanā;

reflect on yourself.

Tỳ-kheo tự phòng hộ,

So attagutto satimā,

A mendicant self-controlled and mindful

Chánh niệm trú an lạc.

sukhaṁ bhikkhu vihāhisi.

will always dwell in happiness.

Tự mình y chỉ mình,

Attā hi attano nātho,

Self is indeed the lord of self,

(dị bản)

ko hi nātho paro siyā;

for who else would be one’s lord?

Tự mình đi đến mình,

Attā hi attano gati,

Self is indeed the home of self,

Vậy hãy tự điều phục,

tasmā saṁyamamattānaṁ;

so restrain yourself,

Như khách buôn ngựa hiền.

Assaṁ bhadraṁva vāṇijo.

as a merchant his thoroughbred steed.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Vakkali

Vakkalittheravatthu

Tỳ-kheo nhiều hân hoan,

Pāmojjabahulo bhikkhu,

A monk full of joy

Tịnh tín giáo pháp Phật,

pasanno buddhasāsane;

trusting in the Buddha’s teaching,

Chứng cảnh giới tịch tịnh,

Adhigacche padaṁ santaṁ,

would realize the peaceful state,

Các hạnh an tịnh lạc.

saṅkhārūpasamaṁ sukhaṁ.

the blissful stilling of conditions.

Chuyện Sa-di Sumana

Sumanasāmaṇeravatthu

Tỳ-kheo tuy tuổi nhỏ

Yo have daharo bhikkhu,

A young mendicant

Siêng tu giáo pháp Phật,

yuñjati buddhasāsane;

devoted to the Buddha’s teaching,

Soi sáng thế gian này,

Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,

shines upon this world,

Như trăng thoát khỏi mây.

abbhā muttova candimā.

like the moon freed from clouds.
