Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Taṇhāvagga Kapilamacchavatthu

Người sống đời phóng dật,

Manujassa pamattacārino,

When a man lives heedlessly,

Ái tăng như dây leo.

Taṇhā vaḍḍhati māluvā viya;

craving grows in them like a camel’s foot creeper.

Nhảy đời này đời khác,

So plavatī hurā huraṁ,

They jump from one thing to the next, like a langur

Như vượn tham quả rừng.

Phalamicchaṁva vanasmi vānaro.

greedy for fruit in a forest grove.

Ai sống trong đời này,

Yaṁ esā sahate jammī,

Whoever is beaten by this wretched craving,

Bị ái dục buộc ràng

taṇhā loke visattikā;

this attachment to the world,

Sầu khổ sẽ tăng trưởng,

Sokā tassa pavaḍḍhanti,

their sorrow grows,

Như cỏ bi gặp mưa.

abhivaṭṭhaṁva bīraṇaṁ.

like grass in the rain.

Ai sống trong đời này

Yo cetaṁ sahate jammiṁ,

But whoever prevails over this wretched craving,

Ái dục được hàng phục

taṇhaṁ loke duraccayaṁ;

so hard to get over in the world,

Sầu rơi khỏi người ấy

Sokā tamhā papatanti,

their sorrows fall from them,

Như giọt nước lá sen.

udabinduva pokkharā.

like a drop from a lotus-leaf.

Ðây điều lành Ta dạy,

Taṁ vo vadāmi bhaddaṁ vo,

I say this to you, good people,

Các người tụ họp đây,

yāvantettha samāgatā;

all those who have gathered here:

Hãy nhổ tận gốc ái

Taṇhāya mūlaṁ khaṇatha,

dig up the root of craving,

Như nhổ gốc cỏ bi.

usīratthova bīraṇaṁ;

as you’d dig up grass in search of roots.

Chớ để ma phá hoại,

Mā vo naḷaṁva sotova,

Don’t let Māra break you again and again,

Như dòng nước cỏ lau.

māro bhañji punappunaṁ.

like a stream breaking a reed.

Chuyện con heo nái tơ

Sūkarapotikāvatthu

Như cây bị chặt đốn,

Yathāpi mūle anupaddave daḷhe,

A tree grows back even when cut down,

Gốc chưa hại vẫn bền

Chinnopi rukkho punareva rūhati;

so long as its roots are strong and undamaged;

Ái tùy miên chưa nhổ,

Evampi taṇhānusaye anūhate,

suffering springs up again and again,

Khổ này vẫn sanh hoài.

Nibbattatī dukkhamidaṁ punappunaṁ.

so long as the tendency to craving is not pulled out.

Ba mươi sáu dòng ái,

Yassa chattiṁsati sotā,

A person of low views

Trôi người đến khả ái.

manāpasavanā bhusā;

in whom the thirty-six streams

Các tư tưởng tham ái.

Mahāvahanti duddiṭṭhiṁ,

that flow to pleasure are mighty,

Cuốn trôi người tà kiến.

saṅkappā rāganissitā.

is swept away by lustful thoughts.

Dòng ái dục chảy khắp,

Savanti sabbadhi sotā,

The streams flow everywhere;

Như giây leo mọc tràn,

latā uppajja tiṭṭhati;

a weed springs up and remains.

Thấy giây leo vừa sanh,

Tañca disvā lataṁ jātaṁ,

Seeing this weed that has been born,

Với tuệ, hãy đoạn gốc.

mūlaṁ paññāya chindatha.

cut the root with wisdom.

Người đời nhớ ái dục,

Saritāni sinehitāni ca,

A personage’s joys

Ưa thích các hỷ lạc.

Somanassāni bhavanti jantuno;

flow from senses and cravings.

Tuy mong cầu an lạc,

Te sātasitā sukhesino,

Seekers of happiness, bent on pleasure,

Chúng vẫn phải sanh già.

Te ve jātijarūpagā narā.

continue to be reborn and grow old.

Người bị ái buộc ràng,

Tasiṇāya purakkhatā pajā,

People governed by thirst,

Vùng vẫy và hoảng sợ, Như thỏ bị sa lưới.

Parisappanti sasova bandhito;

crawl about like a trapped rabbit.

Chúng sanh ái trói buộc,

Saṁyojanasaṅgasattakā,

Bound and fettered, for a long time

Chịu khổ đau dài dài.

Dukkhamupenti punappunaṁ cirāya.

they return to pain time and again.

Người bị ái buộc ràng,

Tasiṇāya purakkhatā pajā,

People governed by thirst,

Vùng vẫy và hoảng sợ, Như thỏ bị sa lưới.

Parisappanti sasova bandhito;

crawl about like a trapped rabbit.

Do vậy vị tỷ kheo, Mong cầu mình ly tham

Tasmā tasiṇaṁ vinodaye,

That’s why one who longs for dispassion

Nên nhiếp phục ái dục.

Ākaṅkhanta virāgamattano.

should dispel thirst.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo hoàn tục

Vibbhantabhikkhuvatthu

Lìa rừng lại hướng rừng

Yo nibbanatho vanādhimutto,

Unsnarled, they set out for the jungle,

Thoát rừng chạy theo rừng.

Vanamutto vanameva dhāvati;

then they run right back to the jungle they left behind.

Nên xem người như vậy,

Taṁ puggalametha passatha,

Just look at this individual!

Ðược thoát khỏi buộc ràng. Lại chạy theo ràng buộc.

Mutto bandhanameva dhāvati.

Freed, they run to bondage.

Bandhanāgāravatthu

Sắt, cây, gai trói buộc

Na taṁ daḷhaṁ bandhanamāhu dhīrā,

The attentive say that shackle is not strong

Người trí xem chưa bền.

Yadāyasaṁ dārujapabbajañca;

that’s made of iron, wood, or knots.

Tham châu báu, trang sức

Sārattarattā maṇikuṇḍalesu,

But obsession with jeweled earrings,

Tham vọng vợ và con.

Puttesu dāresu ca yā apekkhā.

concern for your partners and children:

Người có trí nói rằng: Trói buộc này thật bền.

Etaṁ daḷhaṁ bandhanamāhu dhīrā,

this, say the attentive, is a strong shackle

Trì kéo xuống, lún xuống, Nhưng thật sự khó thoát.

Ohārinaṁ sithilaṁ duppamuñcaṁ;

dragging the indulgent down, hard to escape.

Người trí cắt trừ nó,

Etampi chetvāna paribbajanti,

Having cut this one too they go forth,

Bỏ dục lạc, không màng.

Anapekkhino kāmasukhaṁ pahāya.

unconcerned, having given up sensual pleasures.

Khemātherīvatthu

Người đắm say ái dục Tự lao mình xuống dòng

Ye rāgarattānupatanti sotaṁ,

Besotted by lust they fall into the stream,

Như nhện sa lưới dệt.

Sayaṅkataṁ makkaṭakova jālaṁ;

like a spider caught in the web she wove.

Người trí cắt trừ nó,

Etampi chetvāna vajanti dhīrā,

The attentive proceed, having cut this one too,

Bỏ mọi khổ, không màng.

Anapekkhino sabbadukkhaṁ pahāya.

unconcerned, having given up all suffering.

Uggasenavatthu

Bỏ quá, hiện, vị lai,

Muñca pure muñca pacchato,

Let go of the past, let go of the future,

Ðến bờ kia cuộc đời,

Majjhe muñca bhavassa pāragū;

let go of the present, having gone beyond rebirth.

Ý giải thoát tất cả,

Sabbattha vimuttamānaso,

With your heart freed in every respect,

Chớ vướng tại sanh già.

Na punaṁ jātijaraṁ upehisi.

you’ll not come again to rebirth and old age.

Chuyện bậc hiền trí Cūḷadhanuggaha

Cūḷadhanuggahapaṇḍitavatthu

Người tà ý nhiếp phục,

Vitakkamathitassa jantuno,

For a personage churned by thoughts,

Tham sắc bén nhìn tịnh,

Tibbarāgassa subhānupassino;

very lustful, focusing on beauty,

Người ấy ái tăng trưởng,

Bhiyyo taṇhā pavaḍḍhati,

their craving grows and grows,

Làm giây trói mình chặt.

Esa kho daḷhaṁ karoti bandhanaṁ.

tying them with a stout bond.

Ai vui, an tịnh ý,

Vitakkūpasame ca yo rato,

But one who loves to calm their thoughts,

Quán bất tịnh, thường niệm,

Asubhaṁ bhāvayate sadā sato;

developing perception of ugliness, ever mindful,

Người ấy sẽ diệt ái,

Esa kho byanti kāhiti,

will surely eliminate that craving,

Cắt đứt Ma trói buộc.

Esa checchati mārabandhanaṁ.

cutting off the bonds of Māra.

Māravatthu

Ai tới đích không sợ,

Niṭṭhaṅgato asantāsī,

One who is confident, unafraid,

Ly ái, không nhiễm ô

vītataṇho anaṅgaṇo;

rid of craving, free of blemish,

Nhổ mũi tên sanh tử,

Acchindi bhavasallāni,

having struck down the arrows flying to future lives,

Thân này thân cuối cùng.

antimoyaṁ samussayo.

this bag of bones is their last.

Ái lìa, không chấp thủ

Vītataṇho anādāno,

Rid of craving, free of grasping,

Cú pháp khéo biện tài

Niruttipadakovido;

expert in the definition of terms,

Thấu suốt từ vô ngại,

Akkharānaṁ sannipātaṁ,

knowing the correct

Hiểu thứ lớp trước sau.

Jaññā pubbāparāni ca;

structure and sequence of syllables,

Thân này thân cuối cùng

Sa ve “antimasārīro,

they are said to be one who bears their final body,

Vị như vậy được gọi, Bậc Ðại trí, đại nhân.

Mahāpañño mahāpuriso”ti vuccati.

one of great wisdom, a great person.

Upakājīvakavatthu

Ta hàng phục tất cả, Ta rõ biết tất cả,

Sabbābhibhū sabbavidūhamasmi,

I am the vanquisher of all, the knower of all,

Không bị nhiễm pháp nào.

Sabbesu dhammesu anūpalitto;

unsullied in the midst of all things.

Ta từ bỏ tất cả Ái diệt, tự giải thoát.

Sabbañjaho taṇhakkhaye vimutto,

I’ve given up all, freed in the ending of craving.

Ðã tự mình thắng trí, Ta gọi ai thầy ta?

Sayaṁ abhiññāya kamuddiseyyaṁ.

Since I know for myself, whose follower should I be?

Sakkapañhavatthu

Pháp thí, thắng mọi thí!

Sabbadānaṁ dhammadānaṁ jināti,

The gift of the teaching surmounts all other gifts;

Pháp vị, thắng mọi vị!

Sabbarasaṁ dhammaraso jināti;

the taste of the teaching surmounts all other tastes;

Pháp hỷ, thắng mọi hỷ!

Sabbaratiṁ dhammarati jināti,

the joy of the teaching surmounts all other joys;

Ái diệt, thắng mọi khổ!

Taṇhakkhayo sabbadukkhaṁ jināti.

the ending of craving surmounts all suffering.

Aputtakaseṭṭhivatthu

Tài sản hại người ngu.

Hananti bhogā dummedhaṁ,

Riches ruin a simpleton,

Không người tìm bờ kia

no ca pāragavesino;

but not a seeker of the far shore.

Kẻ ngu vì tham giàu,

Bhogataṇhāya dummedho,

From craving for wealth, a simpleton

Hại mình và hại người.

hanti aññeva attanaṁ.

ruins themselves and others.

Cỏ làm hại ruộng vườn,

Tiṇadosāni khettāni,

Weeds are the bane of crops,

Tham làm hại người đời.

rāgadosā ayaṁ pajā;

Tasmā hi vītarāgesu,

That’s why a gift to one rid of greed

dinnaṁ hoti mahapphalaṁ.

is so very fruitful.
