Ta như voi giữa trận

Ahaṁ nāgova saṅgāme,

Like an elephant struck

Hứng chịu cung tên rơi,

cāpato patitaṁ saraṁ;

with arrows in battle,

Chịu đựng mọi phỉ báng.

Ativākyaṁ titikkhissaṁ,

I shall endure abuse,

Ác giới rất nhiều người.

dussīlo hi bahujjano.

for so many folk are badly behaved.

Voi luyện, đưa dự hội,

Dantaṁ nayanti samitiṁ,

The well-tamed beast is the one led to the crowd;

Ngựa luyện, được vua cưỡi,

dantaṁ rājābhirūhati;

the tamed elephant’s the one the king mounts;

Người luyện, bậc tối thượng

Danto seṭṭho manussesu,

the tamed person who endures abuse

Chịu đựng mọi phỉ báng.

yotivākyaṁ titikkhati.

is the best of human beings.

Tốt thay, con la thuần,

Varamassatarā dantā,

Those who have tamed themselves are better

Thuần chủng loài ngựa xinh.

ājānīyā ca sindhavā;

than fine tamed mules,

Ðại tượng, voi có ngà.

Kuñjarā ca mahānāgā,

thoroughbreds from Sindh,

Tự điều mới tối thượng.

attadanto tato varaṁ.

or giant tuskers.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo từng làm huấn luyện voi

Hatthācariyapubbakabhikkhuvatthu

Chẳng phải loài cưỡi ấy,

Na hi etehi yānehi,

For not on those mounts

Ðưa người đến Niết bàn,

gaccheyya agataṁ disaṁ;

would you go to the untrodden place,

Chỉ có người tự điều,

Yathāttanā sudantena,

whereas, with the help of one <j>whose self is well tamed,

Ðến đích nhờ điều phục.

danto dantena gacchati.

you go there, tamed by the tamed.

Chuyện con trai vị Bà-la-môn già

Parijiṇṇabrāhmaṇaputtavatthu

Con voi tên Tài Hộ,

Dhanapālo nāma kuñjaro,

The tusker named Dhanapāla

Phát dục, khó điều phục,

Kaṭukabhedano dunnivārayo;

is musky in rut, hard to control.

Trói buộc, không ăn uống.

Baddho kabaḷaṁ na bhuñjati,

Bound, he eats not a morsel,

Voi nhớ đến rừng voi.

Sumarati nāgavanassa kuñjaro.

for he misses the elephant forest.

Chuyện vua Pasenadi (Ba-tư-nặc)

Pasenadikosalavatthu

Người ưa ngủ, ăn lớn

Middhī yadā hoti mahagghaso ca,

One who gets drowsy from overeating,

Nằm lăn lóc qua lại,

Niddāyitā samparivattasāyī;

fond of sleep, rolling round the bed

Chẳng khác heo no bụng,

Mahāvarāhova nivāpapuṭṭho,

like a great hog stuffed with grain:

Kẻ ngu nhập thai mãi.

Punappunaṁ gabbhamupeti mando.

that dullard returns to the womb again and again.

Chuyện Sa-di Sānu

Sānusāmaṇeravatthu

Trước tâm này buông lung,

Idaṁ pure cittamacāri cārikaṁ,

In the past my mind wandered

Chạy theo ái, dục, lạc.

Yenicchakaṁ yatthakāmaṁ yathāsukhaṁ;

how it wished, where it liked, as it pleased.

Nay Ta chánh chế ngự,

Tadajjahaṁ niggahessāmi yoniso,

Now I’ll carefully guide it,

Như cầm móc điều voi.

Hatthippabhinnaṁ viya aṅkusaggaho.

as a trainer with a hook guides a rutting elephant.

Chuyện con voi Pāveyyaka

Pāveyyakahatthivatthu

Hãy vui không phóng dật,

Appamādaratā hotha,

Delight in diligence!

Khéo phòng hộ tâm ý.

sacittamanurakkhatha;

Take good care of your mind!

Kéo mình khỏi ác đạo,

Duggā uddharathattānaṁ,

Pull yourself out of this pit,

Như voi bị sa lầy.

paṅke sannova kuñjaro.

like an elephant sunk in a bog.

Chuyện chư Tỳ-kheo

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Nếu được bạn hiền trí

Sace labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ,

If you find an alert companion,

Ðáng sống chung, hạnh lành,

Saddhiṁ caraṁ sādhuvihāridhīraṁ;

an attentive friend to live happily together,

Nhiếp phục mọi hiểm nguy

Abhibhuyya sabbāni parissayāni,

then, overcoming all adversities,

Hoan hỷ sống chánh niệm.

Careyya tenattamano satīmā.

wander with them, joyful and mindful.

Không gặp bạn hiền trí.

No ce labhetha nipakaṁ sahāyaṁ,

If you find no alert companion,

Ðáng sống chung, hạnh lành

Saddhiṁ caraṁ sādhuvihāridhīraṁ;

no attentive friend to live happily together,

Như vua bỏ nước bại

Rājāva raṭṭhaṁ vijitaṁ pahāya,

then, like a king who flees his conquered realm,

Hãy sống riêng cô độc, Như voi sống rừng voi.

Eko care mātaṅgaraññeva nāgo.

wander alone like a tusker in the wilds.

Tốt hơn sống một mình,

Ekassa caritaṁ seyyo,

It’s better to wander alone,

Không người ngu kết bạn.

Natthi bāle sahāyatā;

there’s no fellowship with fools.

Ðộc thân, không ác hạnh

Eko care na ca pāpāni kayirā,

Wander alone and do no wrong,

Sống vô tư vô lự, Như voi sống rừng voi.

Appossukko mātaṅgaraññeva nāgo.

at ease like a tusker in the wilds.

Māravatthu

Vui thay, bạn lúc cần!

Atthamhi jātamhi sukhā sahāyā,

A friend in need is a blessing;

Vui thay, sống biết đủ,

Tuṭṭhī sukhā yā itarītarena;

it’s a blessing to be content with whatever;

Vui thay, chết có đức!

Puññaṁ sukhaṁ jīvitasaṅkhayamhi,

good deeds are a blessing at the end of life,

Vui thay, mọi khổ đoạn.

Sabbassa dukkhassa sukhaṁ pahānaṁ.

and giving up all suffering is a blessing.

Vui thay, hiếu kính mẹ,

Sukhā matteyyatā loke,

In this world it’s a blessing to serve

Vui thay, hiếu kính cha,

atho petteyyatā sukhā;

one’s mother and one’s father.

Vui thay, kính Sa-môn,

Sukhā sāmaññatā loke,

And it’s a blessing also to serve

Vui thay, kính Hiền Thánh.

atho brahmaññatā sukhā.

ascetics and brahmins.

Vui thay, già có giới!

Sukhaṁ yāva jarā sīlaṁ,

It’s a blessing to keep precepts until you grow old;

Vui thay, tín an trú!

sukhā saddhā patiṭṭhitā;

a blessing to be grounded in faith;

Vui thay, được trí tuệ,

Sukho paññāya paṭilābho,

the getting of wisdom’s a blessing;

Vui thay, ác không làm.

pāpānaṁ akaraṇaṁ sukhaṁ.

and it’s a blessing to avoid doing wrong.
