Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Maggavagga Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu

Tám chánh, đường thù thắng,

Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho,

Of paths, the eightfold is the best;

Bốn câu, lý thù thắng,

saccānaṁ caturo padā;

of truths, the four statements;

Ly tham, pháp thù thắng,

Virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṁ,

dispassion is the best of things,

Giữa các loài hai chân, Pháp nhãn, người thù thắng.

dvipadānañca cakkhumā.

and the Clear-eyed One is the best of humans.

Ðường này, không đường khác

Eseva maggo natthañño,

<em>This</em> is the path, there is no other

Ðưa đến kiến thanh tịnh.

Dassanassa visuddhiyā;

for the purification of vision.

Nếu ngươi theo đường này,

Etañhi tumhe paṭipajjatha,

You all must practice this,

Ma quân sẽ mê loạn.

Mārassetaṁ pamohanaṁ.

it is the way to baffle Māra.

Nếu ngươi theo đường này,

Etañhi tumhe paṭipannā,

When you all are practicing this,

Ðau khổ được đoạn tận.

dukkhassantaṁ karissatha;

you’ll make an end of suffering.

Ta dạy ngươi con đường.

Akkhāto vo mayā maggo,

I have explained the path to you

Với trí, gai chướng diệt.

aññāya sallakantanaṁ.

for extracting the thorn with wisdom.

Ngươi hãy nhiệt tình làm,

Tumhehi kiccamātappaṁ,

You yourselves must do the work,

Như Lai chỉ thuyết dạy.

akkhātāro tathāgatā;

the Realized Ones just show the way.

Người hành trì thiền địn

Paṭipannā pamokkhanti,

Meditators practicing absorption

Thoát trói buộc ác Ma.

jhāyino mārabandhanā.

are released from Māra’s bonds.

Aniccalakkhaṇavatthu

Tất cả hành vô thường

“Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā”ti,

All conditions are impermanent—

Với Tuệ, quán thấy vậy

yadā paññāya passati;

when this is seen with wisdom,

Ðau khổ được nhàm chán:

Atha nibbindati dukkhe,

one grows disillusioned with suffering:

Chính con đường thanh tịnh.

esa maggo visuddhiyā.

this is the path to purity.

Dukkhalakkhaṇavatthu

Tất cả hành khổ đau

“Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā”ti,

All conditions are suffering—

Với Tuệ, quán thấy vậy,

Anattalakkhaṇavatthu

Tất cả pháp vô ngã,

“Sabbe dhammā anattā”ti,

All things are not-self—

Padhānakammikatissattheravatthu

Khi cần, không nỗ lực,

Uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno,

They don’t get going when it’s time to start;

Tuy trẻ mạnh, nhưng lười

Yuvā balī ālasiyaṁ upeto;

they’re young and strong, but given to sloth.

Chí nhu nhược, biếng nhác.

Saṁsannasaṅkappamano kusīto,

Their mind depressed in sunken thought,

Với trí tuệ thụ động, Sao tìm được chánh đạo?

Paññāya maggaṁ alaso na vindati.

lazy and slothful, they can’t discern the path.

Sūkarapetavatthu

Lời nói được thận trọng, Tâm tư khéo hộ phòng,

Vācānurakkhī manasā susaṁvuto,

Guarded in speech, restrained in mind,

Thân chớ làm điều ác

Kāyena ca nākusalaṁ kayirā;

doing no unskillful bodily deed.

Hãy giữ ba nghiệp tịnh,

Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye,

Purify these three ways of performing deeds,

Chứng đạo thánh nhân dạy.

Ārādhaye maggamisippaveditaṁ.

and win the path known to seers.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Poṭṭhila

Poṭṭhilattheravatthu

Tu Thiền, trí tuệ sanh,

Yogā ve jāyatī bhūri,

From meditation springs wisdom,

Bỏ Thiền, trí tuệ diệt.

ayogā bhūrisaṅkhayo;

without meditation, wisdom ends.

Biết con đường hai ngả

Etaṁ dvedhāpathaṁ ñatvā,

Knowing these two paths—

Ðưa đến hữu, phi hữu,

bhavāya vibhavāya ca;

of progress and decline—

Hãy tự mình nỗ lực,

Tathāttānaṁ niveseyya,

you should conduct yourself

Khiến trí tuệ tăng trưởng.

yathā bhūri pavaḍḍhati.

so that wisdom grows.

Chuyện các vị Tỳ-kheo già

Pañcamahallakabhikkhuvatthu

Ðốn rừng không đốn cây

Vanaṁ chindatha mā rukkhaṁ,

Cut down the jungle, not just a tree;

Từ rừng, sinh sợ hãi;

vanato jāyate bhayaṁ;

from the jungle springs fear.

Ðốn rừng và ái dục,

Chetvā vanañca vanathañca,

Having cut down jungle and snarl,

Tỷ kheo, hãy tịch mịch.

nibbanā hotha bhikkhavo.

be free of jungles, mendicants!

Khi nào chưa cắt tiệt,

Yāva hi vanatho na chijjati,

So long as the vine, no matter how small,

Ái dục giữa gái trai,

Aṇumattopi narassa nārisu;

that ties a man to women is not cut,

Tâm ý vẫn buộc ràng,

Paṭibaddhamanova tāva so,

his mind remains trapped,

Như bò con vú mẹ.

Vaccho khīrapakova mātari.

like a calf suckling its mother.

Chuyện đệ tử Trưởng lão Sāriputta (Xá-lợi-phất)

Suvaṇṇakārattheravatthu

Tự cắt dây ái dục,

Ucchinda sinehamattano,

Cut out affection for oneself,

Như tay bẻ sen thu,

Kumudaṁ sāradikaṁva pāṇinā;

like plucking an autumn lotus.

Hãy tu đạo tịch tịnh,

Santimaggameva brūhaya,

Foster only the path to peace,

Niết-bàn, Thiện Thệ dạy.

Nibbānaṁ sugatena desitaṁ.

the extinguishment the Holy One taught.

Chuyện phú thương Mahādhana

Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu

Mùa mưa ta ở đây

Idha vassaṁ vasissāmi,

“Here I will stay for the rains;

Ðông, hạ cũng ở đây,

idha hemantagimhisu;

here for winter, here the summer”;

Người ngu tâm tưởng vậy,

Iti bālo vicinteti,

thus the fool thinks,

Không tự giác hiểm nguy.

antarāyaṁ na bujjhati.

not realizing the danger.

Kisāgotamīvatthu

Người tâm ý đắm say

Taṁ puttapasusammattaṁ,

As a mighty flood sweeps away a sleeping village,

Con cái và súc vật,

byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ;

death steals away a man

Tử thần bắt người ấy,

Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova,

who dotes on children and cattle,

Như lụt trôi hàng ngủ.

maccu ādāya gacchati.

his mind caught up in them.

Chuyện nàng Paṭācārā

Paṭācārāvatthu

Một khi tử thần đến,

Na santi puttā tāṇāya,

Children provide you no shelter,

Không có con che chở,

na pitā nāpi bandhavā;

nor does father, nor relatives.

Không cha, không bà con,

Antakenādhipannassa,

When you’re seized by the terminator,

Không thân thích che chở.

natthi ñātīsu tāṇatā.

there’s no shelter in family.

Biết rõ ý nghĩa này,

Etamatthavasaṁ ñatvā,

Knowing the reason for this,

Bậc trí lo trì giới,

paṇḍito sīlasaṁvuto;

astute, and ethically restrained,

Mau lẹ làm thanh tịnh,

Nibbānagamanaṁ maggaṁ,

one would quickly clear the path

Con đường đến Niết bàn.

khippameva visodhaye.

that leads to extinguishment.
