Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Dhammaṭṭhavagga Vinicchayamahāmattavatthu

Ngươi đâu phải pháp trụ,

Na tena hoti dhammaṭṭho,

You don’t become just

Xử sự quá chuyên chế,

yenatthaṁ sāhasā naye;

by passing hasty judgment.

Bậc trí cần phân biệt

Yo ca atthaṁ anatthañca,

An astute person evaluates both

Cả hai chánh và tà!

ubho niccheyya paṇḍito.

what is pertinent and what is irrelevant.

Không chuyên chế, đúng pháp,

Asāhasena dhammena,

A wise one judges others without haste,

Công bằng, dắt dẫn người,

samena nayatī pare;

justly and impartially;

Bậc trí sống đúng pháp,

Dhammassa gutto medhāvī,

that guardian of the law

Thật xứng danh Pháp trụ.

“dhammaṭṭho”ti pavuccati.

is said to be just.

Chuyện 6 vị Tỳ-kheo gây rối

Chabbaggiyavatthu

Không phải vì nói nhiều,

Na tena paṇḍito hoti,

You’re not an astute scholar

Mới xứng danh bậc trí.

yāvatā bahu bhāsati;

just because you speak a lot.

An ổn, không oán sợ.

Khemī averī abhayo,

One who is secure, free of enmity and fear,

Thật đáng gọi bậc Trí.

“paṇḍito”ti pavuccati.

is said to be astute.

Chuyện Pháp sư Ekudāna

Ekudānakhīṇāsavavatthu

Không phải vì nói nhiều,

Na tāvatā dhammadharo,

You’re not one who has memorized the teaching

Mới xứng danh trì pháp,

yāvatā bahu bhāsati;

just because you recite a lot.

Những ai tuy nghe ít,

Yo ca appampi sutvāna,

Someone who directly sees the teaching

Nhưng thân hành đúng pháp,

dhammaṁ kāyena passati;

after hearing only a little

Không phóng túng chánh pháp,

Sa ve dhammadharo hoti,

is truly one who has memorized the teaching,

Mới xứng danh trì pháp.

yo dhammaṁ nappamajjati.

for they can never forget it.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Lakuṇṭaka Bhaddiya

Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyattheravatthu

Không phải là trưởng lão,

Na tena thero so hoti,

You don’t become a senior

Nếu cho có bạc đầu.

yenassa palitaṁ siro;

by getting some grey hairs;

Người chỉ tuổi tác cao,

Paripakko vayo tassa,

for one ripe only in age,

Ðược gọi là “Lão ngu”.

“moghajiṇṇo”ti vuccati.

is said to have aged in vain.

Ai chân thật, đúng pháp,

Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca,

One who is truthful and principled,

Không hại, biết chế phục,

ahiṁsā saṁyamo damo;

harmless, restrained, and self-controlled,

Bậc trí không cấu uế,

Sa ve vantamalo dhīro,

attentive, purged of stains,

Mới xứng danh “Trưởng Lão”.

“thero” iti pavuccati.

is said to be a senior.

Chuyện các Tỳ-kheo tham vọng

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Không phải nói lưu loát,

Na vākkaraṇamattena,

Not by mere enunciation,

Không phải sắc mặt đẹp,

vaṇṇapokkharatāya vā;

or a beautiful complexion

Thành được người lương thiện,

Sādhurūpo naro hoti,

does a person become holy,

Nếu ganh, tham, dối trá.

issukī maccharī saṭho.

if they’re jealous, stingy, and devious.

Ai cắt được, phá được

Yassa cetaṁ samucchinnaṁ,

But if they’ve cut that out,

Tận gốc nhổ tâm ấy

mūlaghaccaṁ samūhataṁ;

dug it up at the root, eradicated it,

Người trí ấy diệt sân,

Sa vantadoso medhāvī,

that intelligent one, purged of vice,

Ðược gọi người hiền thiện.

“sādhurūpo”ti vuccati.

is said to be holy.

Hatthakavatthu

Ðầu trọc, không Sa-môn

Na muṇḍakena samaṇo,

A liar and breaker of vows is no ascetic

Nếu phóng túng, nói láo.

abbato alikaṁ bhaṇaṁ;

just because they shave their head.

Ai còn đầy dục tham,

Icchālobhasamāpanno,

How on earth can one be an ascetic

Sao được gọi Sa-môn?

samaṇo kiṁ bhavissati.

who’s full of desire and greed?

Ai lắng dịu hoàn toàn,

Yo ca sameti pāpāni,

One who stops all wicked deeds,

Các điều ác lớn nhỏ,

aṇuṁthūlāni sabbaso;

great and small,

Vì lắng dịu ác pháp,

Samitattā hi pāpānaṁ,

because of stopping wicked deeds

Ðược gọi là Sa-môn.

“samaṇo”ti pavuccati.

is said to be an ascetic.

Chuyện người Bà-la-môn khất sĩ

Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu

Chỉ khất thực nhờ người,

Na tena bhikkhu so hoti,

You don’t become a mendicant

Ðâu phải là Tỳ-kheo!

yāvatā bhikkhate pare;

just by begging from others.

Phải theo pháp toàn diện,

Vissaṁ dhammaṁ samādāya,

One who has undertaken domestic duties

Khất sĩ không, không đủ.

bhikkhu hoti na tāvatā.

has not yet become a mendicant.

Ai vượt qua thiện ác,

Yodha puññañca pāpañca,

But one living a spiritual life,

Chuyên sống đời Phạm Hạnh,

bāhetvā brahmacariyavā;

who has banished both merit and evil,

Sống thẩm sát ở đời,

Saṅkhāya loke carati,

who wanders having appraised the world,

Mới xứng danh tỳ-kheo.

sa ve “bhikkhū”ti vuccati.

is said to be a mendicant.

Chuyện ngoại đạo im lặng

Titthiyavatthu

Im lặng nhưng ngu si,

Na monena munī hoti,

You don’t become a sage by being sagelike,

Ðâu được gọi ẩn sĩ?

mūḷharūpo aviddasu;

while still confused and ignorant.

Như người cầm cán cân,

Yo ca tulaṁva paggayha,

The astute one who holds the scales,

Bậc trí chọn điều lành.

varamādāya paṇḍito.

taking only the best,

Từ bỏ các ác pháp,

Pāpāni parivajjeti,

and shunning the bad—

Mới thật là ẩn sĩ.

sa munī tena so muni;

that is a sage, <j>and that is how one becomes a sage.

Ai thật hiểu hai đời

Yo munāti ubho loke,

One who sagely weighs both in the world,

Mới được gọi ẩn sĩ.

“muni” tena pavuccati.

is thereby said to be a sage.

Chuyện ngư dân Ariya

Bālisikavatthu

Còn sát hại sinh linh,

Na tena ariyo hoti,

You don’t become a noble one

Ðâu được gọi Hiền thánh.

yena pāṇāni hiṁsati;

by harming living beings.

Không hại mọi hữu tình,

Ahiṁsā sabbapāṇānaṁ,

One harmless toward all living beings

Mới được gọi Hiền thánh.

“ariyo”ti pavuccati.

is said to be a noble one.

Chuyện các Tỳ-kheo tự mãn

Sambahulasīlādisampannabhikkhuvatthu

Chẳng phải chỉ giới cấm

Na sīlabbatamattena,

Not by precepts and observances,

Cũng không phải học nhiều,

bāhusaccena vā pana;

nor by much learning,

Chẳng phải chứng thiền định,

Atha vā samādhilābhena,

nor by meditative immersion,

Sống thanh vắng một mình.

vivittasayanena vā.

nor by living in seclusion,

“Ta hưởng an ổn lạc,

Phusāmi nekkhammasukhaṁ,

do I experience the bliss of renunciation

Phàm phu chưa hưởng được”:

aputhujjanasevitaṁ;

not frequented by ordinary people.

Tỳ-kheo, chớ tự tin

Bhikkhu vissāsamāpādi,

A mendicant cannot rest confident

Khi lậu hoặc chưa diệt.

appatto āsavakkhayaṁ.

without attaining the end of defilements.
