Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Malavagga Goghātakaputtavatthu

Ngươi nay giống lá héo,

Paṇḍupalāsova dānisi,

Today you’re like a withered leaf,

Diêm sứ đang chờ ngươi,

Yamapurisāpi ca te upaṭṭhitā;

Yama’s men await you.

Ngươi đứng trước cửa chết,

Uyyogamukhe ca tiṭṭhasi,

You stand at the departure gates,

Ðường trường thiếu tư lương.

Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.

yet you have no supplies for the road.

Hãy tự làm hòn đảo,

So karohi dīpamattano,

Make an island of yourself!

Tinh cần gấp, sáng suốt.

Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava;

Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!

Trừ cấu uế, thanh tịnh,

Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo,

Purged of stains, flawless,

Ðến Thánh địa chư Thiên.

Dibbaṁ ariyabhūmiṁ upehisi.

you’ll go to the heavenly realm of the noble ones.

Ðời ngươi nay sắp tàn,

Upanītavayo ca dānisi,

You’ve journeyed the stages of life,

Tiến gần đến Diêm Vương.

Sampayātosi yamassa santikaṁ;

and now you set out to meet Yama.

Giữa đường không nơi nghỉ,

Vāso te natthi antarā,

Along the way there’s nowhere to stay,

Ðường trường thiếu tư lương.

Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati.

yet you have no supplies for the road.

Hãy tự làm hòn đảo,

So karohi dīpamattano,

Make an island of yourself!

Tinh cần gấp, sáng suốt.

Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava;

Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!

Trừ cấu uế, thanh tịnh,

Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo,

Purged of stains, flawless,

Chẳng trở lại sanh già.

Na punaṁ jātijaraṁ upehisi.

you’ll not come again to rebirth and old age.

Chuyện người Bà-la-môn tuần tự

Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu

Bậc trí theo tuần tự.

Anupubbena medhāvī,

A smart person would purge

Từng sát na trừ dần

thokaṁ thokaṁ khaṇe khaṇe;

their own stains gradually,

Như thợ vàng lọc bụi

Kammāro rajatasseva,

bit by bit, moment by moment,

Trừ cấu uế nơi mình.

niddhame malamattano.

like a smith smelting silver.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Tissa

Tissattheravatthu

Như sét từ sắt sinh,

Ayasāva malaṁ samuṭṭhitaṁ,

It is the rust born on the iron

Sắt sanh lại ăn sắt,

Tatuṭṭhāya tameva khādati;

that eats away the place it arose.

Cũng vậy, quá lợi dưỡng

Evaṁ atidhonacārinaṁ,

And so it is their own deeds

Tự nghiệp dẫn cõi ác.

Sāni kammāni nayanti duggatiṁ.

that lead the overly-ascetic to a bad place.

Lāḷudāyīvatthu

Không tụng làm nhớp kinh,

Asajjhāyamalā mantā,

Not rehearsing is the stain of hymns.

Không đứng dậy, bẩn nhà,

anuṭṭhānamalā gharā;

The stain of houses is neglect.

Biếng nhác làm nhơ sắc,

Malaṁ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṁ,

Laziness is the stain of beauty.

Phóng dật uế người canh.

pamādo rakkhato malaṁ.

A guard’s stain is negligence.

Chuyện người chồng có vợ ngoại tình

Aññatarakulaputtavatthu

Tà hạnh nhơ đàn bà,

Malitthiyā duccaritaṁ,

Misconduct is a woman’s stain.

Xan tham nhớp kẻ thí,

maccheraṁ dadato malaṁ;

A giver’s stain is stinginess.

Ác pháp là vết nhơ,

Malā ve pāpakā dhammā,

Bad qualities are a stain

Ðời này và đời sau.

asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.

in this world and the next.

Trong hàng cầu uế ấy,

Tato malā malataraṁ,

But a worse stain than these

Vô minh, nhơ tối thượng,

avijjā paramaṁ malaṁ;

is ignorance, the worst stain of all.

Ðoạn nhơ ấy, tỳ-kheo,

Etaṁ malaṁ pahantvāna,

Having given up that stain,

Thành bậc không uế nhiễm.

nimmalā hotha bhikkhavo.

be without stains, mendicants!

Chuyện Tỳ-kheo Cūḷasāri theo tà mạng

Cūḷasāribhikkhuvatthu

Dễ thay, sống không hổ

Sujīvaṁ ahirikena,

Life is easy for the shameless.

Sống lỗ mãng như quạ,

kākasūrena dhaṁsinā;

With all the rude courage of a crow,

Sống công kích huyênh hoang,

Pakkhandinā pagabbhena,

they live pushy,

Sống liều lĩnh, nhiễm ô.

saṅkiliṭṭhena jīvitaṁ.

rude, and corrupt.

Khó thay, sống xấu hổ,

Hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṁ,

Life is hard for the conscientious,

Thường thường cầu thanh tịnh.

niccaṁ sucigavesinā;

always seeking purity,

Sống vô tư, khiêm tốn,

Alīnenāppagabbhena,

neither clinging nor rude,

Trong sạch và sáng suốt.

suddhājīvena passatā.

pure of livelihood and discerning.

Pañcaupāsakavatthu

Ai ở đời sát sinh,

Yo pāṇamatipāteti,

Take anyone in this world

Nói láo không chân thật,

musāvādañca bhāsati;

who kills living creatures,

Ở đời lấy không cho,

Loke adinnamādiyati,

speaks falsely, steals,

Qua lại với vợ người.

paradārañca gacchati.

commits adultery,

Uống rượu men, rượu nấu,

Surāmerayapānañca,

and indulges in drinking

Người sống đam mê vậy,

yo naro anuyuñjati;

beer and wine.

Chính ngay tại đời này,

Idheva meso lokasmiṁ,

Right here they dig up

Tự đào bới gốc mình.

mūlaṁ khaṇati attano.

the root of their own self.

Vậy người, hãy nên biết,

Evaṁ bho purisa jānāhi,

Know this, my man:

Không chế ngự là ác,

pāpadhammā asaññatā;

they are unrestrained and wicked.

Chớ để tham phi pháp,

Mā taṁ lobho adhammo ca,

Don’t let that greed and unrighteousness

Làm người đau khổ dài.

ciraṁ dukkhāya randhayuṁ.

inflict pain on you for long.

Chuyện Tỳ-kheo Tissa trẻ hay chê sự cúng dường

Tissadaharavatthu

Do tín tâm, hỷ tâm

Dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṁ,

The people give according to their faith,

Loài người mới bố thí.

yathāpasādanaṁ jano;

according to their confidence.

Ở đây ai bất mãn

Tattha yo ca maṅku bhavati,

If you get upset over that,

Người khác được ăn uống,

paresaṁ pānabhojane;

over others’ food and drink,

Người ấy ngày hoặc đêm,

Na so divā vā rattiṁ vā,

you’ll not, by day or by night,

Không đạt được tâm tịnh?

samādhimadhigacchati.

become immersed in samādhi.

Ai cắt được, phá được,

Yassa cetaṁ samucchinnaṁ,

Those who have cut that out,

Tận gốc nhổ tâm ấy.

mūlaghaccaṁ samūhataṁ;

dug it up at the root, eradicated it,

Người ấy ngày hoặc đêm,

Sa ve divā vā rattiṁ vā,

they will, by day or by night,

Tất đến được tâm định.

samādhimadhigacchati.

become immersed in samādhi.

Chuyện 5 thiện nam tử

Pañcaupāsakavatthu

Lửa nào bằng lửa tham!

Natthi rāgasamo aggi,

There is no fire like greed,

Chấp nào bằng sân hận!

natthi dosasamo gaho;

no crime like hate,

Lưới nào bằng lưới si!

Natthi mohasamaṁ jālaṁ,

no net like delusion,

Sông nào bằng sông ái!

natthi taṇhāsamā nadī.

no river like craving.

Chuyện Trưởng Giả Meṇḍaka (Miên Dương)

Meṇḍakaseṭṭhivatthu

Dễ thay thấy lỗi người,

Sudassaṁ vajjamaññesaṁ,

It’s easy to see the faults of others,

Lỗi mình thấy mới khó.

attano pana duddasaṁ;

hard to see one’s own.

Lỗi người ta phanh tìm,

Paresaṁ hi so vajjāni,

For the faults of others

Như sàng trấu trong gạo.

opunāti yathā bhusaṁ;

are tossed high like hay,

Còn lỗi mình, che đậy,

Attano pana chādeti,

while one’s own are hidden,

Như kẻ gian dấu bài.

kaliṁva kitavā saṭho.

as a cheat hides a bad hand.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Ujjhānasaññī (Ưa Bắt Lỗi)

Ujjhānasaññittheravatthu

Ai thấy lỗi của người,

Paravajjānupassissa,

When you look for the flaws of others,

Thường sanh lòng chỉ trích,

niccaṁ ujjhānasaññino;

always finding fault,

Người ấy lậu hoặc tăng,

Āsavā tassa vaḍḍhanti,

your defilements only grow,

Rất xa lậu hoặc diệt.

ārā so āsavakkhayā.

you’re far from ending defilements.

Chuyện du sĩ Subhadda

Subhaddaparibbājakavatthu

Hư không, không dấu chân,

Ākāseva padaṁ natthi,

In the atmosphere there is no track,

Ngoài đây, không sa môn,

samaṇo natthi bāhire;

there’s no true ascetic outside here.

Chúng sanh thích hý luận,

Papañcābhiratā pajā,

People enjoy proliferation,

Như Lai, hý luận trừ.

nippapañcā tathāgatā.

the Realized Ones are free of proliferation.

Hư không, không dấu chân,

Ākāseva padaṁ natthi,

In the atmosphere there is no track,

Ngoài đây, không sa môn.

samaṇo natthi bāhire;

there’s no true ascetic outside here.

Các hành không thường trú,

Saṅkhārā sassatā natthi,

No conditions last forever,

Chư Phật không dao động.

natthi buddhānamiñjitaṁ.

the Awakened Ones are not shaken.
