Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Appamādavagga Sāmāvatīvatthu

Không phóng dật, đường sống,

Appamādo amatapadaṁ,

Heedfulness is the state free of death;

Phóng dật là đường chết.

pamādo maccuno padaṁ;

heedlessness is the state of death.

Không phóng dật, không chết,

Appamattā na mīyanti,

The heedful do not die,

Phóng dật như chết rồi.

ye pamattā yathā matā.

while the heedless are like the dead.

Biết rõ sai biệt ấy,

Evaṁ visesato ñatvā,

Understanding this distinction

Người trí không phóng dật,

appamādamhi paṇḍitā;

when it comes to heedfulness,

Hoan hỷ, không phóng dật,

Appamāde pamodanti,

the astute rejoice in heedfulness,

An vui hạnh bậc Thánh.

ariyānaṁ gocare ratā.

happy in the noble ones’ domain.

Người hằng tu thiền định,

Te jhāyino sātatikā,

They who regularly meditate,

Thường kiên trì tinh tấn.

niccaṁ daḷhaparakkamā;

always staunchly vigorous;

Bậc trí hưởng Niết-bàn,

Phusanti dhīrā nibbānaṁ,

the attentive realize extinguishment,

Ðạt an tịnh vô thượng.

yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ.

the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.

Kumbaghosakaseṭṭhivatthu

Nỗ lực, giữ chánh niệm,

Uṭṭhānavato satīmato,

For the hard-working and mindful,

Tịnh hạnh, hành thận trọng

Sucikammassa nisammakārino;

pure of deed and attentive,

Tự điều, sống theo pháp,

Saññatassa dhammajīvino,

restrained, living righteously, and diligent,

Ai sống không phóng dật, Tiếng lành ngày tăng trưởng.

Appamattassa yasobhivaḍḍhati.

their reputation only grows.

Cūḷapanthakavatthu

Nỗ lực, không phóng dật,

Uṭṭhānenappamādena,

By hard work and diligence,

Tự điều, khéo chế ngự.

saṁyamena damena ca;

by restraint and by self-control,

Bậc trí xây hòn đảo,

Dīpaṁ kayirātha medhāvī,

a smart person would build an island

Nước lụt khó ngập tràn.

yaṁ ogho nābhikīrati.

that the floods cannot overflow.

Bālanakkhattasaṅghuṭṭhavatthu

Chúng ngu si, thiếu trí,

Pamādamanuyuñjanti,

Fools and simpletons

Chuyên sống đời phóng dật.

bālā dummedhino janā;

devote themselves to negligence.

Người trí, không phóng dật,

Appamādañca medhāvī,

But the wise protect diligence

Như giữ tài sản quý.

dhanaṁ seṭṭhaṁva rakkhati.

as their best treasure.

Chớ sống đời phóng dật,

Mā pamādamanuyuñjetha,

Don’t devote yourself to negligence,

Chớ mê say dục lạc.

mā kāmaratisanthavaṁ;

or delight in erotic intimacy.

Không phóng dật, thiền định,

Appamatto hi jhāyanto,

For if you’re diligent and meditate,

Ðạt được an lạc lớn.

pappoti vipulaṁ sukhaṁ.

you’ll attain abundant happiness.

Mahākassapattheravatthu

Người trí dẹp phóng dật,

Pamādaṁ appamādena,

When the astute dispel negligence

Với hạnh không phóng dật,

yadā nudati paṇḍito;

by means of diligence,

Leo lầu cao trí tuệ,

Paññāpāsādamāruyha,

ascending the palace of wisdom,

Không sầu, nhìn khổ sầu,

asoko sokiniṁ pajaṁ;

sorrowless, they behold this generation of sorrow,

Bậc trí đứng núi cao,

Pabbataṭṭhova bhūmaṭṭhe,

as an attentive one on a mountain top

Nhìn kẻ ngu, đất bằng.

dhīro bāle avekkhati.

beholds the fools below.

Chuyện hai Tỳ-kheo bằng hữu

Pamattāpamattadvesahāyakabhikkhuvatthu

Tinh cần giữa phóng dật,

Appamatto pamattesu,

Heedful among the heedless,

Tỉnh thức giữa quần mê.

suttesu bahujāgaro;

wide awake while others sleep—

Người trí như ngựa phi,

Abalassaṁva sīghasso,

a true sage leaves them behind,

Bỏ sau con ngựa hèn.

hitvā yāti sumedhaso.

like a swift horse passing a feeble.

Chuyện Magha (Đế-thích)

Maghavatthu

Ðế-thích không phóng dật,

Appamādena maghavā,

Maghavā became chief of the gods

Ðạt ngôi vị Thiên chủ.

devānaṁ seṭṭhataṁ gato;

by means of diligence.

Không phóng dật, được khen;

Appamādaṁ pasaṁsanti,

People praise diligence,

Phóng dật, thường bị trách.

pamādo garahito sadā.

while negligence is always deplored.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo quán lửa rừng

Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu

Vui thích không phóng dật,

Appamādarato bhikkhu,

A mendicant who loves diligence,

Tỳ-kheo sợ phóng dật,

pamāde bhayadassi vā;

seeing fear in negligence—

Bước tới như lửa hừng,

Saṁyojanaṁ aṇuṁ thūlaṁ,

advances like fire,

Thiêu kiết sử lớn nhỏ.

ḍahaṁ aggīva gacchati.

burning up fetters big and small.

Nigamavāsitissattheravatthu

Vui thích không phóng dật,

Appamādarato bhikkhu,

A mendicant who loves diligence,

Tỳ-kheo sợ phóng dật,

pamāde bhayadassi vā;

seeing fear in negligence—

Không thể bị thối đọa,

Abhabbo parihānāya,

such a one can’t decline,

Nhất định gần Niết-bàn.

nibbānasseva santike.

and has drawn near to extinguishment.
