Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Piyavagga Tayojanapabbajitavatthu

Tự chuyên, không đáng chuyên

Ayoge yuñjamattānaṁ,

Applying yourself where you ought not,

Không chuyên, việc đáng chuyên

yogasmiñca ayojayaṁ;

neglecting what you should be doing,

Bỏ đích, theo hỷ ái,

Atthaṁ hitvā piyaggāhī,

forgetting your goal, you cling to what you hold dear,

Ganh tị bậc tự chuyên.

pihetattānuyoginaṁ.

jealous of those devoted to their heart’s goal.

Chớ gần gũi người yêu,

Mā piyehi samāgañchi,

Don’t ever get too close

Trọn đời xa kẻ ghét.

appiyehi kudācanaṁ;

to those you like or dislike.

Yêu không gặp là khổ,

Piyānaṁ adassanaṁ dukkhaṁ,

For not seeing the liked is suffering,

Oán phải gặp cũng đau.

appiyānañca dassanaṁ.

and so is seeing the disliked.

Do vậy chớ yêu ai,

Tasmā piyaṁ na kayirātha,

Therefore don’t hold anything dear,

Ái biệt ly là ác;

piyāpāyo hi pāpako;

for it’s bad to lose those you love.

Những ai không yêu ghét,

Ganthā tesaṁ na vijjanti,

No ties are found in they who

Không thể có buộc ràng.

yesaṁ natthi piyāppiyaṁ.

hold nothing loved or loathed.

Chuyện người gia trưởng khóc con

Aññatarakuṭumbikavatthu

Do ái sinh sầu ưu,

Piyato jāyatī soko,

Sorrow springs from what we hold dear,

Do ái sinh sợ hãi,

piyato jāyatī bhayaṁ;

fear springs from what we hold dear;

Ai thoát khỏi tham ái,

Piyato vippamuttassa,

one free from holding anything dear

Không sầu, đâu sợ hãi?

natthi soko kuto bhayaṁ.

has no sorrow, let alone fear.

Visākhāvatthu

Ái luyến sinh sầu ưu,

Pemato jāyatī soko,

Sorrow springs from attachment,

Ái luyến sinh sợ hãi.

pemato jāyatī bhayaṁ;

fear springs from attachment;

Ai giải thoát ái luyến

Pemato vippamuttassa,

one free from attachment

Không sầu, đâu sợ hãi?

natthi soko kuto bhayaṁ.

has no sorrow, let alone fear.

Licchavīvatthu

Hỷ ái sinh sầu ưu,

Ratiyā jāyatī soko,

Sorrow springs from relishing,

Hỷ ái sinh sợ hãi.

fear springs from relishing;

Ai giải thoát hỷ ái,

Ratiyā vippamuttassa,

one free from relishing

Không sầu, đâu sợ hãi?

natthi soko kuto bhayaṁ.

Anitthigandhakumāravatthu

Dục ái sinh sầu ưu,

Kāmato jāyatī soko,

Sorrow springs from desire,

Dục ái sinh sợ hãi,

kāmato jāyatī bhayaṁ;

fear springs from desire;

Ai thoát khỏi dục ái,

Kāmato vippamuttassa,

one free from desire

Không sầu, đâu sợ hãi?

natthi soko kuto bhayaṁ.

Chuyện người Bà-la-môn thất hứa

Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu

Tham ái sinh sầu ưu,

Taṇhāya jāyatī soko,

Sorrow springs from craving,

Tham ái sinh sợ hãi.

taṇhāya jāyatī bhayaṁ;

fear springs from craving;

Ai giải thoát tham ái,

Taṇhāya vippamuttassa,

one free from craving

Không sầu, đâu sợ hãi?

natthi soko kuto bhayaṁ.

has no sorrow, let alone fear.

Chuyện 500 cậu bé cúng dâng bánh

Pañcasatadārakavatthu

Ðủ giới đức, chánh kiến;

Sīladassanasampannaṁ,

One accomplished in virtue and vision,

Trú pháp, chứng chân lý,

dhammaṭṭhaṁ saccavedinaṁ;

firmly principled, and truthful,

Tự làm công việc mình,

Attano kamma kubbānaṁ,

doing oneself what ought be done:

Ðược quần chúng ái kính.

taṁ jano kurute piyaṁ.

that’s who the people love.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo chứng quả A-na-hàm

Ekaanāgāmittheravatthu

Ước vọng pháp ly ngôn

Chandajāto anakkhāte,

One eager to realize the ineffable

Ý cảm xúc thượng quả

Manasā ca phuṭo siyā;

would be filled with awareness.

Tâm thoát ly các dục,

Kāmesu ca appaṭibaddhacitto,

Their mind not bound to pleasures of sense,

Xứng gọi bậc Thượng Lưu.

Uddhaṁsototi vuccati.

they’re said to be heading upstream.

Chuyện chàng Nandiya

Nandiyavatthu

Khách lâu ngày ly hương,

Cirappavāsiṁ purisaṁ,

When a man returns safely

An toàn từ xa về,

dūrato sotthimāgataṁ;

after a long time spent abroad,

Bà con cùng thân hữu,

Ñātimittā suhajjā ca,

family, friends, and loved ones

Hân hoan đón chào mừng.

abhinandanti āgataṁ.

celebrate his return.

Cũng vậy các phước nghiệp,

Tatheva katapuññampi,

Just so, when one who has done good

Ðón chào người làm lành,

asmā lokā paraṁ gataṁ;

goes from this world to the next,

Ðời này đến đời kia.

Puññāni paṭigaṇhanti,

their good deeds receive them there,

Như thân nhân, đón chào.

piyaṁ ñātīva āgataṁ.

as family welcomes home one they love.
