Vui thay, chúng ta sống,

Susukhaṁ vata jīvāma,

Let us live so very happily,

Không hận, giữa hận thù!

verinesu averino;

loving among the hostile.

Giữa những người thù hận,

Verinesu manussesu,

Among hostile humans,

Ta sống, không hận thù!

viharāma averino.

let us live with love.

Vui thay, chúng ta sống,

Không bệnh giữa ốm đau!

healthy among the ailing.

Giữa những người bệnh hoạn,

Among ailing humans

Ta sống, không ốm đau.

content among the greedy.

Giữa những người rộn ràng,

Ta sống, không rộn ràng.

Vui thay chúng ta sống,

Không gì, gọi của ta.

yesaṁ no natthi kiñcanaṁ;

we who have nothing.

Ta sẻ hưởng hỷ lạc,

Pītibhakkhā bhavissāma,

We shall feed on rapture,

Như chư thiên Quang Âm.

devā ābhassarā yathā.

like the gods of sublime luminosity.

Kosalaraññoparājayavatthu

Chiến thắng sinh thù oán,

Jayaṁ veraṁ pasavati,

Victory breeds enmity;

Thất bại chịu khổ đau,

dukkhaṁ seti parājito;

the defeated sleep badly.

Sống tịch tịnh an lạc.

Upasanto sukhaṁ seti,

The peaceful sleep at ease,

Bỏ sau mọi thắng bại.

hitvā jayaparājayaṁ.

having left victory and defeat behind.

Aññatarakuladārikāvatthu

Lửa nào sánh lửa tham?

Natthi rāgasamo aggi,

There is no fire like greed,

Ác nào bằng sân hận?

Natthi dosasamo kali;

no crime like hate,

Khổ nào sánh khổ uẩn,

Natthi khandhasamā dukkhā,

no suffering like the aggregates,

Lạc nào bằng tịnh lạc.

Natthi santiparaṁ sukhaṁ.

no bliss beyond peace.

Ekaupāsakavatthu

Ðói ăn, bệnh tối thượng,

Jighacchāparamā rogā,

Hunger is the worst illness,

Các hành, khổ tối thượng,

saṅkhāraparamā dukhā;

conditions are the worst suffering.

Hiểu như thực là vậy,

Etaṁ ñatvā yathābhūtaṁ,

When one has known this as it is,

Niết-bàn, lạc tối thượng.

nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.

extinguishment is the ultimate happiness.

Chuyện vua Pasenadi (Ba-tư-nặc) bớt ăn

Pasenadikosalavatthu

Không bệnh, lợi tối thượng,

Ārogyaparamā lābhā,

Health is the ultimate blessing;

Biết đủ, tiền tối thượng.

Santuṭṭhiparamaṁ dhanaṁ;

contentment, the ultimate wealth;

Thành tín đối với nhau, Là bà con tối thượng,

Vissāsaparamā ñāti,

trust is the ultimate family;

Niết-bàn, lạc tối thượng.

Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.

extinguishment, the ultimate happiness.

Tissattheravatthu

Ðã nếm vị độc cư,

Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā,

Having drunk the nectar of seclusion

Ðược hưởng vị nhàn tịnh,

rasaṁ upasamassa ca;

and the nectar of peace—

Không sợ hãi, không ác,

Niddaro hoti nippāpo,

free of stress, free of evil,

Nếm được vị pháp hỷ.

dhammapītirasaṁ pivaṁ.

drink the joyous nectar of truth.

Chuyện Đế-thích chăm sóc Phật

Sakkavatthu

Lành thay, thấy thánh nhân,

Sāhu dassanamariyānaṁ,

It’s good to see the noble ones,

Sống chung thường hưởng lạc.

sannivāso sadā sukho;

staying with them is always good.

Không thấy những người ngu,

Adassanena bālānaṁ,

Were you not to see fools,

Thường thường được an lạc.

niccameva sukhī siyā.

you’d always be happy.

Sống chung với người ngu,

Bālasaṅgatacārī hi,

For one who consorts with fools

Lâu dài bị lo buồn.

dīghamaddhāna socati;

grieves long.

Khổ thay gần người ngu,

Dukkho bālehi saṁvāso,

Painful is living with fools,

Như thường sống kẻ thù.

amitteneva sabbadā;

like being stuck with your enemy.

Vui thay, gần người trí,

Dhīro ca sukhasaṁvāso,

Happy is living with an attentive one,

Như chung sống bà con.

ñātīnaṁva samāgamo.

like meeting with your kin.

Do vậy:

Tasmā hi—

Therefore:

Bậc hiền sĩ, trí tuệ

Dhīrañca paññañca bahussutañca,

An attentive one, wise and learned,

Bậc nghe nhiều, trì giới, Bậc tự chế, Thánh nhân;

Dhorayhasīlaṁ vatavantamariyaṁ;

a behemoth of virtue, true to their vows, noble:

Hãy gần gũi, thân cận Thiện nhân, trí giả ấy,

Taṁ tādisaṁ sappurisaṁ sumedhaṁ,

follow a true and intelligent person such as this,

Như trăng theo đường sao.

Bhajetha nakkhattapathaṁva candimā.

as the moon tracks the path of the stars.
