Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Buddhavagga Māradhītaravatthu

Vị chiến thắng không bại,

Yassa jitaṁ nāvajīyati,

He whose victory may not be undone,

Vị bước đi trên đời, Không dấu tích chiến thắng,

Jitaṁ yassa noyāti koci loke;

a victory unrivaled in all the world;

Phật giới rộng mênh mông,

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,

by what track would you trace that Buddha,

Ai dùng chân theo dõi Bậc không để dấu tích?

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.

who leaves no track in his infinite range?

Ai giải tỏa lưới tham,

Yassa jālinī visattikā,

Of craving, the weaver, the clinger, he has none:

Ái phược hết dắt dẫn,

Taṇhā natthi kuhiñci netave;

so where can he be traced?

Phật giới rộng mênh mông,

Taṁ buddhamanantagocaraṁ,

By what track would you trace that Buddha,

Ai dùng chân theo dõi Bậc không để dấu tích?

Apadaṁ kena padena nessatha.

who leaves no track in his infinite range?

Devorohaṇavatthu

Người trí chuyên thiền định,

Ye jhānapasutā dhīrā,

The attentive intent on absorption,

Thích an tịnh viễn ly,

nekkhammūpasame ratā;

who love the peace of renunciation,

Chư thiên đều ái kính,

Devāpi tesaṁ pihayanti,

the Buddhas, ever mindful,

Bậc chánh giác, chánh niệm.

sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ.

are envied by even the gods.

Erakapattanāgarājavatthu

Khó thay, được làm người,

Kiccho manussapaṭilābho,

It’s hard to gain a human birth;

Khó thay, được sống còn,

kicchaṁ maccāna jīvitaṁ;

the life of mortals is hard;

Khó thay, nghe Diệu Pháp,

Kicchaṁ saddhammassavanaṁ,

it’s hard to hear the true teaching;

Khó thay, Phật ra đời!

kiccho buddhānamuppādo.

the arising of Buddhas is hard.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Ānanda vấn đạo

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Không làm mọi điều ác.

Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṁ,

Not to do any evil;

Thành tựu các hạnh lành,

kusalassa upasampadā;

to embrace the good;

Tâm ý giữ trong sạch,

Sacittapariyodapanaṁ,

to purify one’s mind:

Chính lời chư Phật dạy.

etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.

this is the instruction of the Buddhas.

Chư Phật thường giảng dạy; Nhẫn, khổ hạnh tối thượng;

Khantī paramaṁ tapo titikkhā,

Patient acceptance is the ultimate fervor.

Niết-bàn quả tối thượng;

Nibbānaṁ paramaṁ vadanti buddhā;

Extinguishment is the ultimate, say the Buddhas.

Xuất gia không phá người;

Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī,

No true renunciate injures another,

Sa môn không hại người.

Na samaṇo hoti paraṁ viheṭhayanto.

nor does an ascetic hurt another.

Không phỉ báng, phá hoại,

Anūpavādo anūpaghāto,

Not speaking ill nor doing harm;

Hộ trì giới căn bản,

Pātimokkhe ca saṁvaro;

restraint in the monastic code;

Ăn uống có tiết độ,

Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṁ,

moderation in eating;

Sàng tọa chỗ nhàn tịnh

Pantañca sayanāsanaṁ;

staying in remote lodgings;

Chuyên chú tăng thượng tâm,

Adhicitte ca āyogo,

commitment to the higher mind—

Chính lời chư Phật dạy.

Etaṁ buddhāna sāsanaṁ.

this is the instruction of the Buddhas.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-kheo không hoan hỷ

Anabhiratabhikkhuvatthu

Dầu mưa bằng tiền vàng,

Na kahāpaṇavassena,

Even if it were raining money,

Các dục khó thỏa mãn.

titti kāmesu vijjati;

you’d not be sated in sensual pleasures.

Dục đắng nhiều ngọt ít,

Appassādā dukhā kāmā,

An astute person understands that sensual pleasures

Biết vậy là bậc trí.

iti viññāya paṇḍito.

offer little gratification and much suffering.

Ðệ tử bậc chánh giác,

Api dibbesu kāmesu,

Thus they find no delight

Không tìm cầu dục lạc,

ratiṁ so nādhigacchati;

even in celestial pleasures.

Dầu là dục chư thiên,

Taṇhakkhayarato hoti,

A disciple of the fully awakened Buddha

Chỉ ưa thích ái diệt.

sammāsambuddhasāvako.

delights in the ending of craving.

Chuyện quốc sư Aggidatta

Aggidattabrāhmaṇavatthu

Loài người sợ hoảng hốt,

Bahuṁ ve saraṇaṁ yanti,

So many go for refuge

Tìm nhiều chỗ quy y,

pabbatāni vanāni ca;

to mountains and forest groves,

Hoặc rừng rậm, núi non,

Ārāmarukkhacetyāni,

to shrines in tended parks;

Hoặc vườn cây, đền tháp.

manussā bhayatajjitā.

those people are driven by fear.

Quy y ấy không ổn,

Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,

But such refuge is no sanctuary,

Không quy y tối thượng.

netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;

it is no supreme refuge.

Quy y các chỗ ấy,

Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma,

By going to that refuge,

Không thoát mọi khổ đau?

sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

you’re not released from all suffering.

Ai quy y Ðức Phật,

Yo ca buddhañca dhammañca,

One gone for refuge to the Buddha,

Chánh Pháp và chư Tăng,

saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato;

to his teaching and to the Saṅgha,

Ai dùng chánh tri kiến,

Cattāri ariyasaccāni,

sees the four noble truths

Thấy được bốn Thánh đế.

sammappaññāya passati.

with right understanding:

Thấy khổ và khổ tập,

Dukkhaṁ dukkhasamuppādaṁ,

suffering, suffering’s origin,

Thấy sự khổ vượt qua,

dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ;

suffering’s transcendence,

Thấy đường Thánh tám ngành,

Ariyaṁ caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ,

and the noble eightfold path

Ðưa đến khổ não tận.

dukkhūpasamagāminaṁ.

that leads to the stilling of suffering.

Thật quy y an ổn,

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ,

Such refuge is a sanctuary,

Thật quy y tối thượng,

etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ;

it is the supreme refuge.

Có quy y như vậy,

Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma,

By going to that refuge,

Mới thoát mọi khổ đau.

sabbadukkhā pamuccati.

you’re released from all suffering.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Ānanda vấn đạo

Ānandattherapañhavatthu

Khó gặp bậc thánh nhân,

Dullabho purisājañño,

It’s hard to find a thoroughbred man:

Không phải đâu cũng có.

na so sabbattha jāyati;

they’re not born just anywhere.

Chỗ nào bậc trí sanh,

Yattha so jāyati dhīro,

A family where that attentive one is born

Gia đình tất an lạc.

taṁ kulaṁ sukhamedhati.

prospers in happiness.

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Vui thay, Phật ra đời!

Sukho buddhānamuppādo,

Happy, the arising of Buddhas!

Vui thay, Pháp được giảng!

sukhā saddhammadesanā;

Happy, the teaching of Dhamma!

Vui thay, Tăng hòa hợp!

Sukhā saṅghassa sāmaggī,

Happy is the harmony of the Saṅgha,

Hòa hợp tu, vui thay!

samaggānaṁ tapo sukho.

and the striving of the harmonious is happy.

Chuyện bảo tháp Phật Kassapa (Ca-diếp)

Kassapadasabalassasuvaṇṇacetiyavatthu

Cúng dường bậc đáng cúng,

Pūjārahe pūjayato,

When a person venerates the worthy—

Chư Phật hoặc đệ tử,

buddhe yadi va sāvake;

the Buddha or his disciple,

Các bậc vượt hý luận,

Papañcasamatikkante,

who have transcended proliferation,

Ðoạn diệt mọi sầu bi.

tiṇṇasokapariddave.

and have left behind grief and lamentation,

Cúng dường bậc như vậy,

Te tādise pūjayato,

quenched, fearing nothing from any quarter—

Tịch tịnh, không sợ hãi,

nibbute akutobhaye;

the merit of one venerating such as these,

Các công đức như vậy,

Na sakkā puññaṁ saṅkhātuṁ,

cannot be calculated by anyone,

Không ai ước lường được.

saying it is just this much.
