Chớ theo pháp hạ liệt.

Hīnaṁ dhammaṁ na seveyya,

Don’t resort to lowly things,

Chớ sống mặc, buông lung;

pamādena na saṁvase;

don’t abide in negligence,

Chớ tin theo tà kiến,

Micchādiṭṭhiṁ na seveyya,

don’t resort to wrong views,

Chớ tăng trưởng tục trần.

na siyā lokavaḍḍhano.

don’t perpetuate the world.

Suddhodanavatthu

Nỗ lực, chớ phóng dật!

Uttiṭṭhe nappamajjeyya,

Get up, don’t be heedless,

Hãy sống theo chánh hạnh;

dhammaṁ sucaritaṁ care;

live by principle, with good conduct.

Người chánh hạnh hưởng lạc,

Dhammacārī sukhaṁ seti,

For one of good conduct sleeps at ease,

Cả đời này, đời sau.

asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.

in this world and the next.

Hãy khéo sống chánh hạnh,

Dhammaṁ care sucaritaṁ,

Live by principle, with good conduct,

Chớ sống theo tà hạnh!

na naṁ duccaritaṁ care;

don’t conduct yourself badly.

Người chánh hạnh hưởng lạc,

Dhammacārī sukhaṁ seti,

For one of good conduct sleeps at ease,

Cả đời này, đời sau.

asmiṁ loke paramhi ca.

in this world and the next.

Chuyện 500 vị Tỳ-kheo tu thiền quán

Pañcasatavipassakabhikkhuvatthu

Hãy nhìn như bọt nước,

Yathā pubbuḷakaṁ passe,

Look upon the world

Hãy nhìn như cảnh huyển!

yathā passe marīcikaṁ;

as a bubble

Quán nhìn đời như vậy,

Evaṁ lokaṁ avekkhantaṁ,

or a mirage,

Thần chết không bắt gặp.

maccurājā na passati.

then the King of Death won’t see you.

Abhayarājakumāravatthu

Hãy đến nhìn đời này,

Etha passathimaṁ lokaṁ,

Come, see this world decked out

Như xe vua lộng lẫy,

cittaṁ rājarathūpamaṁ;

like a fancy royal chariot.

Người ngu mới tham đắm,

Yattha bālā visīdanti,

Here fools founder,

Kẻ trí nào đắm say.

natthi saṅgo vijānataṁ.

but the discerning are not chained.

Sammajjanattheravatthu

Ai sống trước buông lung,

Yo ca pubbe pamajjitvā,

He who once was heedless,

Sau sống không phóng dật,

pacchā so nappamajjati;

but turned to heedfulness,

Chói sáng rực đời này.

Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,

shines upon this world

Như trăng thoát mây che.

abbhā muttova candimā.

like the moon freed from clouds.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Angulimāla

Aṅgulimālattheravatthu

Ai dùng các hạnh lành,

Yassa pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ,

Someone whose bad deed

Làm xóa mờ nghiệp ác,

kusalena pidhīyati;

is supplanted by the good,

Chói sáng rực đời này,

Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,

shines upon this world,

Như trăng thoát mây che.

abbhā muttova candimā.

like the moon freed from clouds.

Chuyện con gái người thợ dệt

Pesakāradhītāvatthu

Ðời này thật mù quáng,

Andhabhūto ayaṁ loko,

Blind is the world,

Ít kẻ thấy rõ ràng.

tanukettha vipassati;

few are those who clearly see.

Như chim thoát khỏi lưới,

Sakuṇo jālamuttova,

Only a handful go to heaven,

Rất ít đi thiên giới.

appo saggāya gacchati.

like a bird freed from a net.

Chuyện 30 vị Tỳ-kheo

Tiṁsabhikkhuvatthu

Như chim thiên nga bay,

Haṁsādiccapathe yanti,

Swans fly by the sun’s path,

Thần thông liệng giữa trời;

ākāse yanti iddhiyā;

psychic sages fly through space.

Chiến thắng ma, ma quân,

Nīyanti dhīrā lokamhā,

The attentive leave the world,

Kẻ trí thoát đời này.

jetvā māraṁ savāhiniṁ.

having vanquished Māra with his legions.

Ciñcamāṇavikāvatthu

Ai vi phạm một pháp,

Ekaṁ dhammaṁ atītassa,

When a personage, spurning the hereafter,

Ai nói lời vọng ngữ,

musāvādissa jantuno;

transgresses in just one thing—

Ai bác bỏ đời sau,

Vitiṇṇaparalokassa,

lying—

Không ác nào không làm.

natthi pāpaṁ akāriyaṁ.

there is no evil they would not do.

Asadisadānavatthu

Keo kiết không sanh thiên,

Na ve kadariyā devalokaṁ vajanti,

The miserly don’t ascend to heaven,

Kẻ ngu ghét bố thí,

Bālā have nappasaṁsanti dānaṁ;

it takes a fool to not praise giving.

Người trí thích bố thí,

Dhīro ca dānaṁ anumodamāno,

The attentive celebrate giving,

Ðời sau, được hưởng lạc.

Teneva so hoti sukhī parattha.

and so find happiness in the hereafter.

Anāthapiṇḍikaputtakālavatthu

Hơn thống lãnh cõi đất,

Pathabyā ekarajjena,

The fruit of stream-entry is better

Hơn được sanh cõi trời,

saggassa gamanena vā;

than being the one king of the earth,

Hơn chủ trì vũ trụ,

Sabbalokādhipaccena,

than going to heaven,

Quả Dự Lưu tối thắng.

sotāpattiphalaṁ varaṁ.
