Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Attavagga Bodhirājakumāravatthu

Nếu biết yêu tự ngã,

Attānañce piyaṁ jaññā,

If you knew your self as beloved,

Phải khéo bảo vệ mình,

rakkheyya naṁ surakkhitaṁ;

you’d look after it so well.

Người trí trong ba canh,

Tiṇṇaṁ aññataraṁ yāmaṁ,

In one of the night’s three watches,

Phải luôn tỉnh thức.

paṭijaggeyya paṇḍito.

an astute person would remain alert.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Upananda

Upanandasakyaputtattheravatthu

Trước hết tự đặt mình,

Attānameva paṭhamaṁ,

The astute would avoid being corrupted

Vào những gì thích đáng.

patirūpe nivesaye;

by first grounding themselves

Sau mới giáo hóa người,

Athaññamanusāseyya,

in what is suitable,

Người trí khỏi bị nhiễm.

na kilisseyya paṇḍito.

and then instructing others.

Padhānikatissattheravatthu

Hãy tự làm cho mình,

Attānañce tathā kayirā,

If one were to treat oneself

Như điều mình dạy người.

yathāññamanusāsati;

as one instructs another,

Khéo tự điều, điều người,

Sudanto vata dametha,

the well-tamed indeed would tame:

Khó thay tự điều phục!

attā hi kira duddamo.

for the self, it seems, is hard to tame.

Kumārakassapamātuttherivatthu

Tự mình y chỉ mình,

Attā hi attano nātho,

One is indeed the lord of oneself,

Nào có y chỉ khác.

ko hi nātho paro siyā;

for who else would be one’s lord?

Nhờ khéo điều phục mình,

Attanā hi sudantena,

By means of a well-tamed self,

Ðược y chỉ khó được.

nāthaṁ labhati dullabhaṁ.

one gains a lord that’s rare indeed.

Mahākālaupāsakavatthu

Ðiều ác mình tự làm,

Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ,

For the evil that is done by oneself,

Tự mình sanh, mình tạo.

Attajaṁ attasambhavaṁ;

born and produced in oneself,

Nghiền nát kẻ ngu si,

Abhimatthati dummedhaṁ,

grinds down a simpleton,

Như kim cương, ngọc báu.

Vajiraṁvasmamayaṁ maṇiṁ.

as diamond grinds a lesser gem.

Devadattavatthu

Phá giới quá trầm trọng,

Yassa accantadussilyaṁ,

One choked by immorality,

Như dây leo bám cây

māluvā sālamivotthataṁ;

as a sal tree by a creeper,

Gieo hại cho tự thân,

Karoti so tathattānaṁ,

does to themselves

Như kẻ thù mong ước.

yathā naṁ icchatī diso.

what a foe only wishes.

Chuyện Devadatta (Đề-bà-đạt-đa) cố ý chia rẽ Tăng

Saṅghabhedaparisakkanavatthu

Dễ làm các điều ác,

Sukarāni asādhūni,

It’s easy to do bad things

Dễ làm tự hại mình.

attano ahitāni ca;

harmful to oneself,

Còn việc lành, việc tốt,

Yaṁ ve hitañca sādhuñca,

but good things that are helpful

Thật tối thượng khó làm.

taṁ ve paramadukkaraṁ.

are the hardest things to do.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Kāla

Kālattheravatthu

Kẻ ngu si miệt thị,

Yo sāsanaṁ arahataṁ,

On account of wicked views—

Giáo pháp bậc La-hán,

ariyānaṁ dhammajīvinaṁ;

scorning the guidance

Bậc Thánh, bậc chánh mạng.

Paṭikkosati dummedho,

of the perfected ones,

Chính do ác kiến này,

diṭṭhiṁ nissāya pāpikaṁ;

the noble ones living righteously—

Như quả loại cây lau

Phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva,

the idiot begets their own self’s demise,

Mang quả tự hoại diệt.

attaghātāya phallati.

like the bamboo bearing fruit.

Chuyện thiện nam tử Cūḷakāla

Cūḷakālaupāsakavatthu

Tự mình, điều ác làm

Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ,

For it is by oneself that evil’s done,

Tự mình làm nhiễm ô,

attanā saṅkilissati;

one is corrupted by oneself.

Tự mình, ác không làm,

Attanā akataṁ pāpaṁ,

It’s by oneself that evil’s not done,

Tự mình làm thanh tịnh.

attanāva visujjhati;

one is purified by oneself.

Tịnh, không tịnh tự mình,

Suddhī asuddhi paccattaṁ,

Purity and impurity are personal matters,

Không ai thanh tịnh ai!

nāñño aññaṁ visodhaye.

no one can purify another.

Chuyện Trưởng lão Attadattha (Tự Lợi)

Attadatthattheravatthu

Dầu lợi người bao nhiêu,

Attadatthaṁ paratthena,

Never neglect what is good for yourself

Chớ quên phần tư lợi,

bahunāpi na hāpaye;

for the sake of another, however great.

Nhờ thắng trí tư lợi.

Attadatthamabhiññāya,

Knowing well what is good for yourself,

Hãy chuyên tâm lợi mình.

sadatthapasuto siyā.

be intent upon your heart’s goal.
