Khuddakanikāya Dhammapada Pāpavagga Cūḷekasāṭakabrāhmaṇavatthu

Hãy gấp làm điều lành,

Abhittharetha kalyāṇe,

Rush to do good,

Ngăn tâm làm điều ác.

pāpā cittaṁ nivāraye;

shield your mind from evil;

Ai chậm làm việc lành,

Dandhañhi karoto puññaṁ,

for when you’re slow to do good,

Ý ưa thích việc ác.

pāpasmiṁ ramatī mano.

your thoughts delight in wickedness.

Seyyasakattheravatthu

Nếu người làm điều ác,

Pāpañce puriso kayirā,

If you do something bad,

Chớ tiếp tục làm thêm.

Na naṁ kayirā punappunaṁ;

don’t do it again and again,

Chớ ước muốn điều ác,

Na tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha,

don’t set your heart on it,

Chứa ác, tất chịu khổ.

Dukkho pāpassa uccayo.

for piling up evil is suffering.

Chuyện Thiên nữ Lājā (Cốm Rang)

Lājadevadhītāvatthu

Nếu người làm điều thiện,

Puññañce puriso kayirā,

If you do something good,

Nên tiếp tục làm thêm.

kayirā naṁ punappunaṁ;

do it again and again,

Hãy ước muốn điều thiện,

Tamhi chandaṁ kayirātha,

set your heart on it,

Chứa thiện, được an lạc.

sukho puññassa uccayo.

for piling up goodness is joyful.

Chuyện Trưởng giả Anāthapiṇḍika (Cấp Cô Độc)

Anāthapiṇḍikaseṭṭhivatthu

Người ác thấy là hiền.

Pāpopi passati bhadraṁ,

Even the wicked see good things,

Khi ác chưa chín muồi,

Yāva pāpaṁ na paccati;

so long as their wickedness has not ripened.

Khi ác nghiệp chín muồi,

Yadā ca paccati pāpaṁ,

But as soon as that wickedness ripens,

Người ác mới thấy ác.

Atha pāpo pāpāni passati.

then the wicked see wicked things.

Người hiền thấy là ác,

Bhadropi passati pāpaṁ,

Even the good see wicked things,

Khi thiện chưa chín muồi,

Yāva bhadraṁ na paccati;

so long as their goodness has not ripened.

Khi thiện nghiệp chín muồi,

Yadā ca paccati bhadraṁ,

But as soon as that goodness ripens,

Người hiền thấy là thiện.

Atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.

then the good see good things.

Chuyện vị Tỳ-khoe khinh giới nhỏ

Asaññataparikkhāravatthu

Chớ chê khinh điều ác,

Māvamaññetha pāpassa,

Think not lightly of evil,

Cho rằng “chưa đến mình”,

na mantaṁ āgamissati;

that it won’t come back to you.

Như nước nhỏ từng giọt,

Udabindunipātena,

The pot is filled with water

Rồi bình cũng đầy tràn.

udakumbhopi pūrati;

falling drop by drop;

Người ngu chứa đầy ác

Bālo pūrati pāpassa,

the fool is filled with wickedness

Do chất chứa dần dần.

thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.

piled up bit by bit.

Biḷālapādakaseṭṭhivatthu

Chớ chê khinh điều thiện

Māvamaññetha puññassa,

Think not lightly of goodness,

Cho rằng “chưa đến mình”,

na mandaṁ āgamissati;

that it won’t come back to you.

Như nước nhỏ từng giọt,

Udabindunipātena,

The pot is filled with water

Rồi bình cũng đầy tràn.

udakumbhopi pūrati;

falling drop by drop;

Người trí chứa đầy thiện,

Dhīro pūrati puññassa,

the attentive one is filled with goodness

Do chất chứa dần dần.

thokaṁ thokampi ācinaṁ.

piled up bit by bit.

Chuyện phú thương tránh hiểm lộ

Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu

Ít bạn đường, nhiều tiền,

Vāṇijova bhayaṁ maggaṁ,

Avoid wickedness,

Người buôn tránh đường hiểm.

appasattho mahaddhano;

as a merchant with rich cargo and small escort

Muốn sống, tránh thuốc độc,

Visaṁ jīvitukāmova,

would avoid a dangerous road,

Hãy tránh ác như vậy.

pāpāni parivajjaye.

or one who loves life would avoid drinking poison.

Kukkuṭamittanesādavatthu

Bàn tay không thương tích,

Pāṇimhi ce vaṇo nāssa,

You can carry poison in your hand

Có thể cầm thuốc độc.

hareyya pāṇinā visaṁ;

if it has no wound,

Không thương tích, tránh độc,

Nābbaṇaṁ visamanveti,

for poison does not infect without a wound;

Không làm, không có ác.

natthi pāpaṁ akubbato.

nothing bad happens unless you do bad.

Kokasunakhaluddakavatthu

Hại người không ác tâm,

Yo appaduṭṭhassa narassa dussati,

Whoever wrongs a man who has done no wrong,

Người thanh tịnh, không uế,

Suddhassa posassa anaṅgaṇassa;

a pure man who has not a blemish,

Tội ác đến kẻ ngu,

Tameva bālaṁ pacceti pāpaṁ,

the evil backfires on the fool,

Như ngược gió tung bụi.

Sukhumo rajo paṭivātaṁva khitto.

like fine dust thrown upwind.

Maṇikārakulūpakatissattheravatthu

Một số sinh bào thai,

Gabbhameke uppajjanti,

Some are born in a womb;

Kẻ ác sinh địa ngục,

nirayaṁ pāpakammino;

evildoers go to hell;

Người thiện lên cõi trời,

Saggaṁ sugatino yanti,

the virtuous go to heaven;

Vô lậu chứng Niết-bàn.

parinibbanti anāsavā.

the undefiled are fully extinguished.

Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe,

Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,

Không lánh vào động núi,

Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa;

nor hiding in a mountain cleft;

Không chỗ nào trên đời,

Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso,

you’ll find no place on the planet

Trốn được quả ác nghiệp.

Yatthaṭṭhito mucceyya pāpakammā.

to escape your wicked deeds.

Suppabuddhasakyavatthu

Không trên trời, giữa biển,

Na antalikkhe na samuddamajjhe,

Not in midair, nor mid-ocean,

Không lánh vào động núi,

Na pabbatānaṁ vivaraṁ pavissa;

nor hiding in a mountain cleft;

Không chỗ nào trên đời,

Na vijjatī so jagatippadeso,

you’ll find no place on the planet

Trốn khỏi tay thần chết.

Yatthaṭṭhitaṁ nappasaheyya maccu.

where you won’t be vanquished by death.
