Ý dẫn đầu các pháp,

Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā,

Intention is the leader of things;

manoseṭṭhā manomayā;

intention is first, they’re made by intention.

Manasā ce paduṭṭhena,

If with corrupt intent

bhāsati vā karoti vā;

you speak or act,

Tato naṁ dukkhamanveti,

suffering follows you,

cakkaṁva vahato padaṁ.

like a wheel, the ox’s foot.

Maṭṭhakuṇḍalīvatthu

happiness follows you

Như bóng, không rời hình.

chāyāva anapāyinī.

like a shadow that never leaves.

Tissattheravatthu

Nó mắng tôi, đánh tôi,

Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ,

“They abused me, they hit me!

Nó thắng tôi, cướp tôi

ajini maṁ ahāsi me;

They beat me, they robbed me!”

Ai ôm hiềm hận ấy,

Ye ca taṁ upanayhanti,

For those who bear such a grudge,

Hận thù không thể nguôi.

veraṁ tesaṁ na sammati.

hatred is never laid to rest.

Nó mắng tôi, đánh tôi,

Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ,

“They abused me, they hit me!

Nó thắng tôi, cướp tôi

ajini maṁ ahāsi me;

They beat me, they robbed me!”

Không ôm hiềm hận ấy,

Ye ca taṁ nupanayhanti,

For those who bear no such grudge,

Hận thù được tự nguôi.

veraṁ tesūpasammati.

hatred is laid to rest.

Chuyện nữ Kāḷaya (Dạ-xoa)

Kāḷayakkhinīvatthu

Với hận diệt hận thù,

Na hi verena verāni,

For never is hatred

Ðời này không có được.

sammantīdha kudācanaṁ;

laid to rest by hate,

Không hận diệt hận thù,

Averena ca sammanti,

it’s laid to rest by love:

Là định luật ngàn thu.

esa dhammo sanantano.

this is an ancient teaching.

Chuyện các Tỳ-kheo ở thành Kosambi

Kosambakavatthu

Và người khác không biết,

Pare ca na vijānanti,

When others do not understand,

Chúng ta đây bị hại.

mayamettha yamāmase;

let us, who do understand this,

Chỗ ấy, ai hiểu được

Ye ca tattha vijānanti,

restrain ourselves in this regard;

Tranh luận được lắng êm.

tato sammanti medhagā.

for that is how conflicts are laid to rest.

Chuyện Trưởng giả Mahākāḷa (Đại Hắc)

Mahākāḷattheravatthu

Ai sống nhìn tịnh tướng,

Subhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ,

Those who contemplate the beautiful,

Không hộ trì các căn,

indriyesu asaṁvutaṁ;

their faculties unrestrained,

ăn uống thiếu tiết độ,

Bhojanamhi cāmattaññuṁ,

immoderate in eating,

biếng nhác, chẳng tinh cần.

kusītaṁ hīnavīriyaṁ;

lazy, lacking energy:

Ma uy hiếp kẻ ấy,

Taṁ ve pasahati māro,

Māra strikes them down

như cây yếu trước gió.

vāto rukkhaṁva dubbalaṁ.

like the wind, a feeble tree.

Ai sống quán bất tịnh,

Asubhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ,

Those who contemplate the ugly,

Khéo hộ trì các căn,

Indriyesu susaṁvutaṁ;

their faculties well-restrained,

ăn uống có tiết độ,

Bhojanamhi ca mattaññuṁ,

eating in moderation,

Có lòng tin, tinh cần,

Saddhaṁ āraddhavīriyaṁ;

faithful and energetic:

Ma không uy hiếp được,

Taṁ ve nappasahati māro,

Māra cannot strike them down,

Như núi đá, trước gió.

Vāto selaṁva pabbataṁ.

like the wind, a rocky mountain.

Chuyện Devadatta (Đề-bà-đạt-đa)

Devadattavatthu

Ai mặc áo cà-sa.

Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṁ,

One who, not free of stains themselves,

tâm chưa rời uế trược,

yo vatthaṁ paridahissati;

would wear the robe stained in ocher,

không tự chế, không thực,

Apeto damasaccena,

bereft of self-control and truth:

không xứng áo cà-sa

na so kāsāvamarahati.

they are not worthy of the ocher robe.

Ai rời bỏ uế trược,

Yo ca vantakasāvassa,

One who’s purged all their stains,

giới luật khéo nghiêm trì,

sīlesu susamāhito;

steady in ethics,

tự chế, sống chơn thực,

Upeto damasaccena,

possessed of self-control and of truth,

thật xứng áo cà-sa.

sa ve kāsāvamarahati.

they are truly worthy of the ocher robe.

Sāriputtattheravatthu

Không chân, tướng chân thật,

Asāre sāramatino,

Thinking the inessential is essential,

chân thật, thấy không chân:

sāre cāsāradassino;

seeing the essential as inessential;

chúng không đạt chân thật,

Te sāraṁ nādhigacchanti,

they don’t realize the essential,

do tà tư, tà hạnh.

micchāsaṅkappagocarā.

for wrong thoughts are their habitat.

Chân thật, biết chân thật,

Sārañca sārato ñatvā,

Having known the essential as essential,

Không chân, biết không chân:

asārañca asārato;

and the inessential as inessential;

chúng đạt được chân thật,

Te sāraṁ adhigacchanti,

they realize the essential,

do chánh tư, chánh hạnh.

sammāsaṅkappagocarā.

for right thoughts are their habitat.

Nandattheravatthu

Như mái nhà vụng lợp,

Yathā agāraṁ ducchannaṁ,

Just as rain seeps into

Mưa liền xâm nhập vào.

vuṭṭhī samativijjhati;

a poorly roofed house,

Cũng vậy tâm không tu,

Evaṁ abhāvitaṁ cittaṁ,

lust seeps into

Tham dục liền xâm nhập.

rāgo samativijjhati.

an undeveloped mind.

Như ngôi nhà khéo lợp,

Yathā agāraṁ suchannaṁ,

Just as rain doesn’t seep into

Mưa không xâm nhập vào.

vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati;

a well roofed house,

Cũng vậy tâm khéo tu,

Evaṁ subhāvitaṁ cittaṁ,

lust doesn’t seep into

Tham dục không xâm nhập.

rāgo na samativijjhati.

a well developed mind.

Cundasūkarikavatthu

Nay sầu, đời sau sầu,

Idha socati pecca socati,

Here they grieve, hereafter they grieve,

Kẻ ác, hai đời sầu;

Pāpakārī ubhayattha socati;

an evildoer grieves in both places.

Nó sầu, nó ưu não,

So socati so vihaññati,

They grieve and fret,

Thấy nghiệp uế mình làm.

Disvā kammakiliṭṭhamattano.

seeing their own corrupt deeds.

Dhammikaupāsakavatthu

Nay vui, đời sau vui,

Idha modati pecca modati,

Here they rejoice, hereafter they rejoice,

Làm phước, hai đời vui,

Katapuñño ubhayattha modati;

one who does good rejoices in both places.

Nó vui, nó an vui,

So modati so pamodati,

They rejoice and celebrate,

Thấy nghiệp tịnh mình làm.

Disvā kammavisuddhimattano.

seeing their own pure deeds.

Chuyện Devadatta (Đề-bà-đạt-đa)

Devadattavatthu

Nay than, đời sau than,

Idha tappati pecca tappati,

Here they’re tormented, <j>hereafter they’re tormented,

Kẻ ác, hai đời than,

Pāpakārī ubhayattha tappati;

an evildoer is tormented in both places.

Nó than: ‘Ta làm ác’

“Pāpaṁ me katan”ti tappati,

They’re tormented <j>thinking of bad things they’ve done;

Ðọa cõi dữ, than hơn.

Bhiyyo tappati duggatiṁ gato.

when gone to a bad place, <j>they’re tormented all the more.

Chuyện nàng Sumanādevī

Sumanadevīvatthu

Nay sướng, đời sau sướng,

Idha nandati pecca nandati,

Here they delight, hereafter they delight,

Làm phước, hai đời sướng.

Katapuñño ubhayattha nandati;

one who does good delights in both places.

Nó sướng: ‘Ta làm thiện’,

“Puññaṁ me katan”ti nandati,

They delight thinking of good things they’ve done;

Sanh cõi lành, sướng hơn.

Bhiyyo nandati suggatiṁ gato.

when gone to a good place, they delight all the more.

Chuyện hai Tỳ-kheo bằng hữu

Dvesahāyakabhikkhuvatthu

Nếu người nói nhiều kinh,

Bahumpi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno,

Much though they may recite scripture,

Không hành trì, phóng dật;

Na takkaro hoti naro pamatto;

if a negligent person does not apply them,

Như kẻ chăn bò người,

Gopova gāvo gaṇayaṁ paresaṁ,

then, like a cowherd who counts the cattle of others,

Không phần Sa môn hạnh.

Na bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.

they miss out on the blessings of the ascetic life.

Dầu nói ít kinh điển,

Appampi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno,

Little though they may recite scripture,

Nhưng hành pháp, tùy pháp,

Dhammassa hoti anudhammacārī;

if they live in line with the teaching,

Từ bỏ tham, sân, si,

Rāgañca dosañca pahāya mohaṁ,

having given up greed, hate, and delusion,

Tĩnh giác, tâm giải thoát,

Sammappajāno suvimuttacitto;

with deep understanding and heart well freed,

Không chấp thủ hai đời,

Anupādiyāno idha vā huraṁ vā,

not grasping to this life or the next,

Dự phần Sa môn hạnh.

Sa bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.

they share in the blessings of the ascetic life.
